The student felt good on the algebra that he is working on so we worked mostly on his chemistry assignments. His previous homework was on single swap reactions in aqueous solutions, but this one was on double swaps. He understands well how to balance reactions. Once he got the method down, he was doing well. We then touched a little bit on some of the projectile motion stuff he was doing in math. I broke it down and showed him where it all comes from, which required a little bit of calculus but not so much that it was inaccessible. Hopefully, that helps him feel like there is a reason for what he is doing and it's not quite so random.

We covered types of intermolecular forces, ionization energy trends, allotropes, stoichiometry, and molecular vs empirical formula. He said he should have a study guide next week which will help us create a more structured lesson. I suggested he cherry-pick difficult questions from various chapters of his Chemistry textbook to more easily identify areas that need clarification.

We covered basic organic chemistry subjects like nomenclature and conformational isomers. The student struggled with the chair conformation for quite some time, but was able to figure it out after some review. He was very interested and engaging with the material asking a lot of questions. I employed visual diagrams and exercises in this session. He learned a lot from the review today, and he is going to review his notes for next session.

The student and I went over the basics of the macromolecules chapter in her textbook. This included talking about the general idea of polymers and their building blocks. We discussed carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. In particular, we spent some time on amino acids and how they are grouped for being hydrophobic or hydrophilic. After explaining this concept, I asked her about each of the amino acids so that she could practice classifying them. In the last 15 minutes, we did a brief overview of the cell biology chapter, which her class is covering this week. I suggested that when studying the amino acids, she should look at a copy without the answers and try to classify them herself before looking at the answers. In the future, I also asked her to try to skim the book before class when she does her outline and then, only once she understands the basic concepts, devote time to thoroughly read the book for details.

We covered the Gibbs free energy equation, as well as defined and described the significance of each variable within the equation: enthalpy H, temperature T, and entropy S. It was also important to cover variable states that allow exergonic/spontaneous reactions, as well as endergonic/non-spontaneous reactions. The equation, G = Go + RTlnK, was utilized in a problem set as well interpreting for equilibrium and nonequilibrium conditions.

The student has a science exam on weather and climate this week, so we worked through definitions and concepts on that topic. I focused especially on compare/contrast questions which probably go beyond the scope of the class, but seemed to help her fish out the details of various weather systems (hurricanes, hail, etc.). She seems well-prepared.
