The student had a great session today. We started by practicing a reading comprehension passage and using the RUNNERS strategies. She did a fantastic job using each strategy, going back in the text to highlight evidence, and eliminating silly answers, no matter how tricky they were. She used the stop dot strategy to explain what she read after each paragraph. This allowed her to check to make sure she understood that paragraph. When she came to sentences she didn't understand, we reviewed them, and this helped her comprehend the passage in a more clear way. Next, we focused on vocabulary. We reviewed Lesson 1 and 2 words and went through her flashcards. She had completed the Lesson 2 words at home, so this was very helpful to review them quickly. Then, she completed the synonyms for Lesson 2 words. She covered up all the answers and wrote what the word meant. Then, she checked her answers to see which word closely related to her definition. Then, we did sentence completion. This was a great check-in point to see if she was understanding sentences correctly. These sentence completion activities are very similar to the passages we worked on last session. She did fantastic on these sentences as well, and I can tell that she understands Lesson 1 and 2 vocabulary well. For homework, she is to make flashcards for Lesson 3 words and study them. She will also review Lesson 1 and 2 words. We ended our session with writing. She continued her writing on her favorite teacher. She put her brainstorming examples into categories and then planned her intro. She chose to use dialogue for her "hook." She used great vocabulary throughout her intro and will finish the essay next time!

Today the student and I worked primarily on essay writing skills and strategies. First, we reviewed the essay that he had prepared as an assignment for our session. During our previous session we had done the planning for the essay, organizing ideas using a web, and the student subsequently wrote the essay for "homework". During our review we talked about how the process went (ran out of time, felt rushed, etc.) and some lessons learned for the future (make sure to write a conclusion, which he had done, and work on time management.) Next, the student and I reviewed a sample essay that is considered of high quality. We discussed the different things that the author had done that made this a good essay (e.g. topic sentences, use of humor, giving the reader information about the author, transitions) and he took notes on these characteristics so that he can use them in his own writing. Finally, he and I spent time building vocabulary through a variety of methods. We discussed some different stems/prefixes and brainstormed words which used them. For homework the student identified a writing prompt for which he is going to plan and write an essay in 25 minutes to simulate the test.

We began with reading comprehension. The student is becoming more proficient at using the reading strategies we discussed. He is still not at the goal level, but he improves daily. He voiced that it was challenging to articulate the main idea of a passage, so his homework will focus on that. His two-step equation homework showed that he is mixing up the first and second steps. We reviewed the process together, and he was able to correct his steps and accurately finish five questions independently and efficiently, showing mastery! We will continue to work on this and reintroduce geometry next week. We continue to manage cognitive fatigue, as I teach the student shortcuts and strategies to free up some brain space.

We discussed the student's school courses as they relate to the ISEE and his academic background. I went over some specific test-taking strategies for him to implement in terms of both math and verbal sections. From the diagnostic test results, I worked with him on math practice problems in factor trees, greatest common factor, and several probability-related questions with interpretation of graphs and Venn diagrams. In terms of verbal questions, we discussed multiple steps and strategies for how to work with questions when he does not know all of the words. He is very bright and catches on quickly to new concepts, as well as review of information. I've also suggested strategies for him to start on with his regular schoolwork that he will find helpful on the ISEE.

We focused mainly on math this session. The student is a strong reader, but her confidence in math is not very high. Often she knows the right thing to do, but she doubts herself. We will work on her confidence. In future sessions, I will discuss how strategies of estimation can help a student figure out the correct answer.
