Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

Peoria, AZ HSPT tutoring
Today we had our first session. We briefly went over the structure of the ACT, then went into the specifics of the science section. We discussed the three different passage types (data representation, experiments, and scientist conflict) and the importance of being flexible with choosing to order these passages (now--> later --> never). The "now" passages are those that we can get the main point the fastest (simple charts and graphs, consistent trends, numbers in the figures, and short answers). These are also the passages that you have a familiarity/comfort with based on your own personal interests. We set up a basic approach to how we're going to work the science section: work the graphs, work the questions, and read only when you need to. We went over examples of graphs and tables, and discussed the possible important information we need to extract from them before we continue to the question. Finally, we spent a lot of time doing example problems of scientist conflict passage types. Our basic strategy for this passage type is to look at the questions first, extract the questions that have to do with one particular scientist/theory, read the paragraph about that theory, and identify the main point, then repeat the process for the second scientist/theory. Identify the main point as well as look for similarities and differences between the two. Go back and answer any questions that pertain to both theories. I stressed the importance of keeping notes in the margins and illustrating the trends in tables and charts with arrows and key words. I am going to send them both practice science tests so they can practice what we learned today about ordering passages and drawing on the test pamphlet (which they cannot do online).

The student and I began by going through two practice reading sections. I went over the basic strategy for this section and then had her complete the first passage, which was very difficult. We then went through an entire writing multiple choice section. She is scoring about 9/11 on these sections overall, and she improved on her scores as we moved further along in the section. We went over the questions she missed in detail, and I explained the grammatical rules involved in answering the question. At the very end of the session, we went through practice math problems, and I explained how to solve the problem that she did not understand.

The student and I began work on his SAT II Latin subject test today. Before we could begin on the finer elements of the test, I had to make sure that he knew his forms. We went through all five declension in the nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, and ablative. We then went through all four conjugation in the active and passive, indicative and subjunctive, present, imperfect, future, perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect forms. We also touched on some necessary vocabulary, and finished off with a plan moving forward. I am going to send him a link to a workbook we will be using.

The student and I briefly went over a reading passage for her AP English class, because it was very similar to the passages we have been working on for the SAT reading portion. We then went over some math concepts and two English passages that she did for homework. We also formulated a basic study outline for the following weeks until she takes the exam. We will spend our last session on Thursday doing a timed one-hour reading passage, and then reviewing all that we have studied and answering any final questions or concerns that she has.
