The student is working on a series of assignments for her AP English Language and Composition class which are intended to help her understand how sentence structures impact the dramatic effect of a text. Yesterday I helped her with a set of exercises which aim to illustrate the effect that simple sentences (independent clauses) can have on writing. Before starting, I made sure that she had a good grasp of the distinction between simple sentences and complex sentences. Equipped with a newly clarified understanding of the simple-complex distinction, we took a look at the exercises. The first asked her to identify the simple sentences in a passage of text. The second exercise asked her to translate the passage into all simple sentences and then read both versions out loud in order to note the different effects.

He has been making steady progress in class, but he wanted to work on knowing literary devices and general organization and idea extraction methods when writing his essays. We read through an article he was given as an assignment, identified literary devices, defined them, and noted their use in the article, then critiqued the article as a whole with reference to the author's intent and his use of emotion and logic. Next, we discussed broad details on his teacher's assignments and expectations and went over his strengths and weaknesses when performing said assignments. Finally, we read through another article, and I had him give me a verbal analysis and his opinion on the piece. We went through his analysis, bullet point by bullet point, discussed those literary devices he found and those he missed. I also pointed out that it is important to be aware of the time period and place in which the author existed and other clues background information might help with when analyzing or critiquing a piece. It was a good first session.

The student and I got to know each other in our first session, and I got a sense of what she learned in school last year. I also got a sense of her English language ability through our conversations. We went over the alphabet and the sounds each letter makes. We then practiced writing and reading simple words. It was a great first session, and she was very attentive and engaged throughout the lesson.

Today I administered a brief survey and 2 diagnostic reading assessments to determine the student's approximate reading level and areas of strength/ growth. He is reading at an end-of-4th grade level. He struggled most with retelling and comprehension (implicit thinking.) He seemed comfortable and at ease with my questions and materials. He was not afraid to ask for help and responded positively to any interventions I made to help clarify tricky questions. Strategies I used today included: sentence starters, modeling, interactive thinking, a deep retell graphic organizer, underlining key information, repeating key details, chunking long questions, providing context and schema, and a visual aid (retell anchor chart.) I left him with the anchor chart so he could print it, internalize it and prepare for the next session to finish where we left off.

We worked on the student's extended essay today. She'd added a couple other paragraphs supporting one of her points. Her essay flows well and is very well structured. However, she still needs more material to add 2,000 more words. I suggested she add more studies concerning the specific hormones and NTs she is talking about, that she talk more about different biological theories of love, and of course add a conclusion once she's fleshed out the essay more. There were some typos here and there, but the essay is on the right track. We did some more researching to find other sources for material.
