We continued working on optimization problems. The student had practiced problems on her own and seemed to have a better grasp of the material than the last time we met. I think that positive reinforcement and practice will go a long way to helping her succeed.

We reviewed place value, and again worked with the place value blocks. The student was able to see that she needed to regroup, without prompting, and did so with the appropriate place value blocks. We also worked on reading comprehension. We read a short one page story and answered some multiple choice questions. She was able to remember what she read, and also go back and look in the text for the answers she could not.

Since we had worked on long division the last time I'd met the student, and because I have only seen him use decimals in the context of money, I taught him how to turn a fraction into a decimal using long division. I started out asking him to divide 2 by 5, which he said was impossible, until we used the idea that 2 is the same as 2.0, or 2.000000 (or however many other zeroes after the decimal point we want to add). It becomes a lot easier to divide 2.0/5 once we've added the zero after the decimal, because then it looks similar to 20/5. He and I practiced the technique of moving the decimal over one place to the right (i.e. 2.0/5 becomes 20/5), doing the division problem (20/5 = 4), and then moving the decimal in the answer one over to the left (4 becomes .4) so that the net work done is 2.0/5 = .4 After we practiced the decimal moving method, we worked on simply doing the long division while leaving the decimal in place and keeping track of where the decimal is in our work and in our answer. Because it's so important for these kinds of problems, we also talked about making sure to write legibly and keep track of which numbers/ digits are in which columns, so that we don't make avoidable mistakes with place values. As always, the student picked up on the new concepts very quickly. I left him with a packet of fraction-to-decimal problems to practice at home.

The student and I worked on addition during our session today. We did a color by sum worksheet and we played an addition card game. She did a great job with both and was answering some really tough questions without help! I am so incredibly excited for the progress she is making and I love our time working together! I can't wait to work with her and build her skills even more.
