Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

We reviewed the student's homework assignment which involved moles, atoms, and grams. She used Avogadro's number and the molar/molecular masses to convert between quantities. She has a test next Tuesday, so we're planning to meet on Sunday at 6 pm to study.

The student and I reviewed periodic trends by completing several problems associated with electronegativity, atomic radii, and ionization energy. He was primarily challenged by understanding the logic behind all of the periodic trends, but by the end of the session he had a much clearer understanding and was able to quickly identity the correct answer. Moving forward, he will need to preview material before class and develop stronger preparation skills. Time spent in class and during tutoring should not be the first time that students see course concepts. Previewing the material before it's taught is highly essential to success.

The student and I reviewed her homework covering limiting reagents, how to determine which reactant is the limiting reagent, dimensional analysis and theoretical and actual yield problems, and enthalpy and heat of reaction. After we discussed the homework, she answered questions about the heat of reaction.

We covered kinetic reactions and rate law mechanisms, and I helped explain the difference between a unimolecular, bimolecular, and termolecular rate law equation. I showed her that with an equilibrium arrow that you have to take into account the reverse reaction and how that specific rate law constant is equal to k^-1. I showed her that the rate is dependent on the slow step of the reaction and that this was the rate determining step. We also reviewed the intermolecular forces and solution chemistry for her quiz this week.

Today we reviewed a lab assignment dealing with separating a mixture of compounds based on their physical properties. We saw that the best way to separate a mixture into its components is to identify major differences in physical properties such as melting point, boiling point, and solubility values. Usually we can melt one compound and retain the other as a solid. Additionally, if the solubility values are vastly different, we can dissolve one compound in water and filter out the remaining solid. The student did well with this concept.

This was a good first section - we worked through the student's homework, which mostly related to unit conversions, and we also went over significant figures. We went over concepts and did some quick practice problems relating to states of matter and basic chemical properties. Finally, we introduced some properties of the periodic table that will be coming up shortly. Overall a productive session.
