Today the student and I went over how to find the "solution" to a pair of linear equations. We went over how to isolate the Y variable on one side of the equation, set the two equations equal to each other and then solve for X. We spent most of the session going over this process until it was systematic. Afterwards I discussed with him what a "solution" represents: the point where two lines touch. The student understood the process well and by the end of the session was able to do the entire process independently.

I used our time in introducing the student to linear inequalities and how to graph them. At first, he confessed that he was lost when I was describing the process of organizing and graphing linear inequalities, but after I worked an example, he saw that it was not very different from graphing linear functions. I gave him a few practice inequalities which he worked well with, only occasionally forgetting when to use solid or dotted lines. Afterwards, I showed him how to solve systems of inequalities by graphing. This made a lot more sense to him since it was very similar to what he was just doing. He worked another practice set without issue.

This was my first session with this student and we worked on solving systems of equations by substitution and by graphing. Prior to our meeting, I compiled a couple of worksheets with numerous examples for these particular topics. By the end of this session, we were able to bring her from a level of not understanding to one of aptitude. She has a quiz on these topics tomorrow and I feel she is confident in her own abilities and more than able to excel on the quiz. This was a very strong first session!
