Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began by working on algebra, with an emphasis on variable manipulation. We followed this with data analysis, where we focused on variations on permutations. We then worked out a plan of action for graduate school applications."
"I debriefed on his recent Physics GRE test. He would really like to improve on his timing strategy. He answer 54/100 questions, although he had approximately 30 minutes remaining after his first pass through the exam. He finds it best to work through lots of examples and to get multiple ways of looking at the same physical phenomena. This session we focused on mechanics examples, including collisions and a center-of-mass problem."
"The student and I worked through the remainder of assessing deductive arguments, and will begin examining how to assess inductive arguments next session. She experienced some difficulties, but was able to improve vastly through the introduction of new techniques for assessing their quality as arguments. She just needs to remember to stick with the techniques that work for her, because her confidence with correct answers decreases when she does not do this."
"Today, we covered a number of biology and organic chemistry topics from questions in the DAT prep book. Some of the topic areas included cladistics/taxonomy, respiration (oxygen binding curves, hemoglobin vs myoglobin, and HbF vs HbA), genetics, hormones, effects and roles of enzymes in state versus path functions, and more!"
"We reviewed r vs. K selection; logistic vs. exponential growth; survivorship curves; mating systems; types of selection; HIPPCO; indicator, invasive, endemic, native, pioneer, and foundation species; and the three domain and five kingdom system. We also reviewed the basics of bacteria, archaea, protists, and plants."
"We started integration today; we went over the formulae for integrating basic polynomial and trigonometric functions, and we discussed integration by parts. We solved problems related to these topics."
