Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did a reading passage practice. She did well-she took her time and was able to justify her answer choices. We then did an editing section together. We talked a little about testing strategies-when to skip a question and when to spend extra time on a question. For Thursday's session, the student will do a final math practice test. She should also do reading, if she has time."
"Really important steps today regarding all we learned about the nuances of circles, triangles, special 30-60-90 rules, algebraic proportions, percentages, and properties of polynomials. Excellent progress within the rigors of trigonometry and the comprehensive breadth of ACT Mathematics. Student will review the next 10 to 15 incorrect answers from the math diagnostic and consider running through the first two Science passages again. We'll get a fresh start next week with Science before returning to Math."
"For this session, the student and I went through writing and revising for the English section. We went through inserting and removing content (both in a sentence and paragraph), separating combining, ordering paragraphs, revising content, analyzing effectiveness, avoiding ambiguity and redundancy, introduction, conclusion, transitions, understanding references, style, and tone."
"Yesterday, the student and I went over the practice essay he had written. The essay was well written in terms of grammar and sentence structure. We talked about ways to improve, such as introducing the topic in a more interesting way and making a more satisfying conclusion. We then went on to do some practice math and science problems on the website, which he did very well with. I definitely think he is well prepared for the test! Our last session will be on Wednesday where we will go through his previous mistakes and make sure those concepts are strong."
"Today, the student and I focused on math review, specifically algebra and order of operations, as certain easy problems are messing with him more than the harder problems. Then, we did a quick overview of common grammar tips and strategies. Finally, we talked about test day, logistics, and methods for dealing with anxiety. He should be prepared and he's put in a lot of hard work!"
"Today the student and I continued to work on the math section of the assessment test. We discussed some general test day tips and some specific strategies for the math section. We went through the problems that he missed and addressed what the right answer was and different ways in which to arrive at that answer. We also discussed many ways to try and catch common mistakes (traps set by the test-makers) and strategies for different types of questions (e.g. finding exceptions to answer choices when the question says 'always,' using easy numbers in place of variables to test equations, drawing logic diagrams, etc.)"
"We continued to review math concepts with the student covering topics that she was unfamiliar with. In addition, she went over a practice English sample test covering the topic of conjunctions and a math quiz covering distance formula."
"We focused mainly on geometry questions that would show up during the admissions test. I wanted to instill in her a habit of doing more mental arithmetic instead of using the calculator for every calculation. This will save a lot more time when it comes to time management for the test. I gave her some homework to do over the weekend and will be giving an online quiz over the topics we covered due by next Monday."
"Today we worked on the reading, science, and writing sections. The student did a great job on all of these sections and answered most of our practice problems correctly. Next time we will focus more on time management and I will give her longer practice sets so she can get used to the timing of a full-length session. We also did some writing practice, which we will start doing in all of our sessions so she can do the kind of writing necessary for this exam."
"The student worked on the English and math sections of the ACT today. He is improving significantly in his math solving skills. We will be working on improving his speed for next session, as he's doing great."
"The student and I worked on a recent diagnostic which I assigned her. She has a good knowledge of the Math we worked on. The books she ordered arrived and she will take a practice test from the ACT book for our next lesson."
"Tonight, we covered three sections briefly just to get some work in before the student's Saturday ACT. We began by looking at a few science sections. We then followed this up with the harder portion of the math test (40-60). We finished by working over some English sections."
