Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We revised the student's transfer essays (two long essays and 1 short response). We focused on strengthening her voice, grammar, and structure. The student was a fantastic student! She was very attentive and receptive to my notes. We will have a 1 hour follow up session tomorrow. For tomorrow, she is supposed to read through her third essay and make some edits on her own. The focus tomorrow should be on small edits rather than revision."
"Client sent her personal statement again and she has made tremendous improvements. There are still areas to revise and refine as we hone in on the main theme of the essay. I sent the essay back with my comments and changes. We are scheduled to speak on the phone on 02/26. This session includes the phone call we will have. After the phone call, client worked on essay and sent it back to me. I just read it and gave her final suggestions before she sends the essay in with her application."
"We worked through worksheets on prepositions, vocabulary, and idioms, and then reviewing his school application and reviewed the principles of the resume. He did well on his vocab test. He has a list of idioms to study and write about."
"We spent the first 30 minutes reviewing and discussing a proverb assignment I gave her last week, and then I helped her get started on next week's vocabulary list. Following this, I reviewed and critiqued an essay the student had written. Lastly, we reviewed out of a grammar book the proper usages of commas in coordinating and subordinating and conjunctions did several practice pages."
"The student had a productive session yesterday. He had two main goals - writing a thesis and the subsequent term paper. He had already gathered a fair amount of material for his subject, so we were able to scan his material and begin to brainstorm topic ideas that could be used for a thesis or to be used as supporting evidence. By the end of the session, not only did he have what I felt was an excellent and concise thesis, but he had a fair amount of supporting data that could go into the body of the essay plus additional avenues for research to be developed for the thesis in his essay. We are going to be meeting again on Wednesday, and I expect that he will have a great deal of his rough draft written by that time. The flow of his ideas is good, and I think that he should be able to write a fairly strong paper."
"The student and I went over corrections to the source-based essay that she had worked on after our last tutoring session. Then she worked on practice problems for the multiple choice section. After she completed these questions, we discussed the correct answers for any that she had answered incorrectly. She is thinking positively towards the material and she's doing everything she can to prepare for the test day. We went over common types of Praxis questions, and she's training herself to notice these questions. She'll be writing another essay in between our sessions, and we'll review it next session. I think these sessions will help her come test day! Next session, we'll review the argument essay, practice a source-based essay, and go over testing strategies."
