How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

High school juniors and seniors are familiar with the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT, as well as its challenging mathematical and verbal sections. The exam is used to judge college applicants. The current test is 3 hours, plus an extra 50 minute essay. A writing and language section is 35 minutes and tests words in context, command of evidence, and history and social studies analyses. Standard English conventions are tested as well. Any of these topics, and more, could be areas of weakness, but a tutor could help you clean up any areas of confusion well ahead of time of the test. Call Varsity Tutors to find an SAT tutor in Pasadena, California, who is able to customize their technique to your abilities and learning style.

Working with a tutor is a new experience. Rather than one standard teaching method, the instructor targets your greatest weaknesses and has multiple teaching strategies at their disposal. If an alternate method fits you best, the tutor will target that in your study plan. Understanding the SAT doesn't come with a "one-size fits all" approach for most. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an independent tutor in Pasadena who can try to help you in understanding the SAT. They will concentrate on your greatest needs. This process has been proven to save much time and effort.

Pasadena, CA SAT tutoring
Went over practice test #4: math, writing, and some critical reading sections. The student's at a point where a score of 1800-1900 is attainable if she does a lot of practice problems in every section, particularly in math and grammar.

In our previous meetings the student was the least confident with the math section, so we completed two SAT math lessons. She did extremely well with the practice problems, even the more difficult ones (patterns, exponents) that most students struggle with. Also worked on critical reading and a short multiple-choice writing section.

During our hiatus, the student took a practice SAT test -- I was very happy to see that his scores have improved greatly since we have been working together (by an aggregate total of 400+ points!). We spent the session looking over the questions he had missed and examining the right answers. His writing score had improved the most, followed by reading, followed by math (but math was his highest score to begin with).

We spent some time reviewing her past pre-calc exams because she has a midterm coming up. Then we went over the critical reading passages she completed for homework. She did better on the single long passages. We also went over her essay which was very well written--clear thesis, good organization, sufficient examples, and good conclusion. She will take practice test 3 for homework.

We began with our typical vocabulary review and then looked over a "mini" essay the student wrote so that we could assess his growth in analyzing prompts. We then spent the rest of the session going over missed math questions, specifically grid-in questions. For our final session next weekend, he will review SAT answers for missed reading questions to better understand how SAT question writers hone in on specific language in passages. He'll also complete as much of a final practice test as he can so that we can review one last set of questions for any pattern of incorrect answers to avoid.

During today's session, the student and I continued to work through practice problems taken from released exams. He is an assertive test taker, but I would like to see him show more initiative when solving more difficult problems, especially in the area of mathematics. Similarly, he must maintain focus and be meticulous when parsing questions in the reading and writing sections to avoid making simple mistakes. I look forward to correcting these issues in future sessions.
