How can Reading tutoring help you?

Find an expert reading tutor in Pasadena, CA, today by contacting Varsity Tutors' educational directors. There is nothing like the personal attention and guidance a tutor provides. It can be problematic for students to learn reading concepts in a classroom format, because all things are new to them, and their teacher's attention is divided among everyone. In tutoring sessions, the focus is entirely on your child and their success. An experienced tutor starts by assessing your student's current reading skills, specifically interested in any aspects of weakness. From this, the tutor can put together a personalized learning plan that aims to try to improve your child's reading and fixes any areas of difficulty.

We could match your youngster with a reading tutor in Pasadena that is passionate about the subject and will instill that passion inside your student to create a truly enjoyable learning experience. Learning to read is fun for students as long as it's presented in an appealing manner. Your son or daughter's tutor will break up reading concepts, such as vocabulary, phonics, and word recognition, in a way that keeps your son or daughter engaged. They are going to also encourage your youngster to read more challenging books, helping them grow as a reader and building their confidence. You may even find your child reading for recreation!

Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Pasadena, CA Reading tutoring
The student and I discussed the awareness she has while reading fiction using rhetorical reading skills. We then reviewed the way she approaches a reading assignment for class. She noted that she looks at the title and section headers, bold/italic words, and any entries in the margins. I encouraged her to review the summary at the beginning of chapters (if noted) figures, sidebars, and any questions that might be included at the end of the chapter. We had about a 30-minute discussion on procrastination and ways she can overcome this habit.

I had which the student read aloud from a novel. Next I worked on more blends: ir, ng, nk, oi, oo (long and short), ou. He wrote them onto index cards with words that have those blends. I also had him write the list in a journal. Next we completed two pages in his workbook. I had him read a short story aloud then answer comprehension questions. Lastly, we reviewed the letter blends from our last lesson.

The student did a very good job focusing today - particularly while reading. He did not try to get out of reading the longer passages and recognized words and sounds well. Additionally, we timed him pronouncing phonics and vocab cards - his new record is 30! (Previous record was 23). We finished up the session by playing a few rounds of Go Fish.

We covered three essay prompts for the assessment exam. First, we went over a sample that he had written, and talked about ways to make the essay better. Then we went through another prompt and discussed the best way to organize that essay. We used a third prompt to have him write a sample that would allow him to get my feedback immediately. At the end of the session, we went back to the first essay, and he revised it. Before finishing the session, we discussed our goals for the next session and areas of focus. He told me he would continue looking at prompts and practice. I had no concerns; it was a great session.

Today the student did math facts of 9 as a warmup. We then moved into 2 step word problems. The word problems were trickier this time because it requires more than one step to solve the problems. We took our time to draw a visual in order to help us solve the problem. We were able to also do several 2 digit x 2 digit problems. In reading, we read a nonfiction passage about Mount Rushmore. We then later had several statements in which we had to identify as fact or opinion.

I spoke with the student's mother regarding her grades first. She expressed concern with the student's math and Language Arts grades. The student is going to begin seeing her math teacher in the morning on Tuesdays through Thursdays in order to help her directly with the math problems that she's struggling with. Her mother also mentioned that the one thing that she is struggling with most in Language Arts is sentence diagramming. Our session started with some brain games, then we defined and gave examples of some basic parts of speech--nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions. We then continued working on figurative language and text structures.
