How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The Preliminary SAT, or PSAT, serves two main functions: it is a practice test for the SAT, and it is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The PSAT has the same basic structure as the SAT, with a multiple choice format divided into math and reading sections. Most students take the test during the October of their sophomore or junior year. For extraordinary students, especially high marks on the exam could help them achieve recognition as a National Merit Scholar, a prestigious award that includes a yearly scholarship of up to $2,500. The highly competitive National Merit Scholarship Award can do more than just help pay for college -- it could try to help your student get into the school of their choice. The prestigious award can help them stand apart from other applicants and get into top-ranked schools. Whether your student wants to aim for the stars or simply views the exam as preparation for the SAT, the educational directors at Varsity Tutors are skilled at helping students in Pasadena connect with PSAT tutors.

High school is a busy time for students and their families, and your tutor is willing to work around your schedule and suit your child's study style. Your student can meet their tutor at home, at the library, at a coffee shop, or at the park. For students who like to learn online, tutors offer remote face-to-face tutoring using our online platform. Putting your student's location preferences first is just the beginning. One-on-one tutoring allows much more flexibility and personalized encouragement and support than classroom test prep can. We can match you with a PSAT tutor in Pasadena, CA, who is passionate about the subject and can instill that passion in your student to create a truly enjoyable learning experience. While your high schooler might come in with the attitude that studying for a standardized test is a drag, they will find that with the right help and the right attitude, any type of learning can be fun and rewarding. Let us connect you with a talented PSAT tutor in Pasadena who is truly excited about the PSAT and teaching it to others.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

Pasadena, CA PSAT tutoring
We covered both physics and math in this session: oscillations, electric forces, fields, potential, circuits, and basic math. We began be covering any questions the student had, from his homework, from last session. He needed some help, with problems that required manipulating hypothetical variables in a formula; like what happens when the radius is doubled, but only a third of the mass remains. He understood these, at the end of the session, but he needs to be assessed again in the future. The rest of physics proceeded as usual. For math, most of our time was spent on recognizing English math vocabulary and definitions. Quick review got him through factoring, fractions, percentages, and decimals. For extra practice, he will continue to work on the chapter reviews.

Today was our last day of preparation, for the standardized exam, the student takes tomorrow. I left him with vocal homework, and based on his results from today's practice test, it is clear that he actually studied it thoroughly. He seems to be ready for the test, so long as he takes the time to focus. Today's session, we went through a complete practice exam together, after grading and discussing his practice exam from before. In addition, we discussed the essay sample he wrote for me, which was far and above the best he has written so far.

The student showed me the critical reading and essay work she had completed for today. After offering her a critique of one of the examples she had chosen for her argument and advice on how she could explain it better to support her claim, we moved on. I finally had a chance to view her assessment score and determined that I ought to review some grammar topics with her for the writing multiple-choice portion of the test. We reviewed subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, perfect tenses, and a few other topics that she had struggled with on the assessment. I left her with several passage assignments, vocabulary work, an essay, and Skills Insight problems for writing.

We started the session going over problems that the student had found difficult or confusing during her independent practice. In a few cases, there was a minor miscalculation. In other cases, we discussed the proper approach for solving them. The rest of the session was spent doing more practice problems. The geometry based problems sometimes caused trouble for her. I tried to emphasize techniques for breaking down the problem so she would not get stuck.

For today's lesson, the student and I went over the concepts of standard deviation, percentiles and quartiles. We worked together to make sure that he understands the two different formulas for calculating standard deviation and when to properly use each one. We covered percentiles and quartiles, which was a topic his teacher was not able to cover in class due to her absence for two days. After completing the worksheets, we worked on a couple more practice problems to make sure he was comfortable with the material. All in all, I think he has a good understanding of these three concepts.
