Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

Pasadena, CA HSPT tutoring
As it was the first session with the student we discussed which subjects and concepts he felt most comfortable with, as well as the concepts he would like to focus on. He has taken a practice ISEE test, so we went over some of the problems that were challenging for him the first round. We covered basic tips in order to familiarize him with the format of the test and certain tricks of process of elimination etc. that will give him an advantage when he takes the exam. We then went on to cover verbal reasoning sections as well as reading comprehension. Finally, we reviewed math concepts that he wanted to cover, specifically stem and leaf as well as box plots and average concepts. I reviewed his results of the test in order to assess which areas we needed to focus on throughout the following sessions. Overall, the student performed very well and improved throughout the session.

We started the session by reviewing the student's homework, which was to go through problems she had done previously and re-work them using the strategies we have been practicing. She did very well, missing only one question because of some confusion over how to work with slopes. We will spend more time on the concept of slope and change in y over change in x, etc. in future sessions. After working closely with her, while she worked some additional practice problems, it is becoming clearer that she understands and can do the mathematics involved in most of the problems she encounters, however, she has some issues translating the word problems into the math. We will focus on this issue as we continue to work together in preparation for the test. Her homework is to complete Section 7 in the test prep book, untimed, focusing on determining what the question is asking so that she can utilize the most efficient techniques and strategies to solve each problem.

The student worked mostly on ACT Math, doing ACT Science at the end. She needs help in math, with geometry, but it isn't anything major. She seems to understand all the concepts. We worked through one practice test for ACT Math. I told her to do more practice tests before we meet next week, and to mark all the questions she gets wrong or needs help on. That way, she'll come in to the session with questions already prepared, and we can use the tutoring more effectively.

The topics of this session were torque, wave basics, and electrostatic forces. We began by going over some of the problems covering forces, from last session, and saw how it transfers to torque. The student learned torque for the first time, understanding the concept and calculations from forces. The idea of equilibrium was applied, with torque and force, to solve problems. For waves, I started with demonstrations and examples, to show what the basics of waves are like; wavelength and amplitude. The same was done for electric forces as for waves, a basic introduction. He learns very quickly, and simply needs to be exposed to more material. The next cognitive leap for him, is to manipulate multiple equations in variable form. He's accustomed to using equations. He did not get to the problem sets from last time, so he will be doing them before next session. It is looking more hopeful that he will be prepared for his exams.

Test review for this Friday. We're getting another session in on Wednesday, so we'll have even more time to practice. We did mostly surface area/volume for 3D shapes today; we practiced with triangular prisms, pyramids, and cylinders, and I left him with a cone to figure out before our Wednesday session, if he has time. Once we got our formulas un-confused, he was able to math everything out really well!
