Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We completed the teacher-provided mid-term review for Algebra I. I assigned additional practice from the state prep test for Algebra and for Biology. We did a short review for the Biology mid-term."
"We went over an assignment that the student had. The assignment included related rates and optimization."
"During this session the student and I discussed techniques for finding the area of regions bounded by two curves. He definitely seemed to have a good grasp on the general approach. This is excellent because it indicates a comfort with the conceptual framework of the related calculus topics. I noticed that he is clearly conversant in the language of mathematics and often does his calculations quickly or in his head."
"Today, the student and I worked on taking derivatives with the definition form and primary alternative form. Her attitude was positive as always. I taught her that if the problem seems too complicated, split it up into parts. This was the first session of the semester, but he got all A's in math last semester! I'm sure he'll do well on this exam."
"We practiced using properties of logarithms to rewrite the log of a number in terms of various known or given logarithms. We reviewed the logarithm of the same number as the base as well as logarithms of numbers raised to powers. Lastly, we continued to work through some PSAT math problems. We looked at writing simultaneous equations from word problems, setting up proportions from tables, graphing inequalities, and using slope of an equation to determine the relationship between two quantities. We reviewed finding the volume of a cube and what happens if we increase the length of the sides. The student was doing well with the logarithms once we remembered the value of the log of a number is the same as the base. She is doing fairly well with the pure math problems on the PSAT, and she is getting better at writing out the setup for word problems."
"The student had two worksheets involving trigonometry concepts. The first consisted of factoring trig equations and solving for all angle solutions in radians among the first time around the unit circle. She had half of it completed before I arrived, and she worked the rest in the session. She left off a couple of plus or minus signs but did well on the rest. The second worksheet involved inverse trig functions mixed with regular trig functions."
