Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was my first tutoring session with the student. We began our tutoring lesson with him taking the ISEE -- Upper Level practice test. On Section #1 , Verbal Reasoning, he got 28 out of 35 questions correct (80% -- Bravo!). On Section #2, Quantitative Reasoning, he got 22 out of 32 questions correct (69%). On Section #3, Reading Comprehension, he got 27 out of 30 questions correct (90% -- Excellent!). On Section #4, Mathematics Achievement, he correctly answered 33 of the 42 questions (79%). We concluded today's tutoring session with vocabulary development. I am using the "Vocabulary Cartoons" Book. He and I reviewed the 10 new vocabulary words in Chapter 1. Following our review of the vocabulary words, he took a twenty question quiz. He correctly answered 19 of the 20 quiz questions (95%). He is a very bright student. He was focused and on task during the entire tutoring lesson. Thus, our first session was very productive."
"Today we went over the essay that I assigned the student to complete for today's session. We discussed mechanics and grammar within the essay. We then reviewed tips on what the readers are looking for and addressed three additional essay prompts. Her writing shows skill, and she was able to complete a full essay under the time constraints controlled by the SAT. She became more confident upon reviewing additional SAT prompts. For homework, I asked her to complete the Reading diagnostic, and I gave her an essay prompt to fully address, as well as a new vocabulary list."
"The student had taken a math practice test earlier in the week, so we focused first on going over the questions from the test. We discussed graphing equations, especially parabolas. We worked through several problems involving distance formula and slope/intercept. I went over the equations for computing volumes and surface areas of pyramids and cylinders. We then looked at similar questions from another practice test, and the student seemed to have a much firmer grasp of the concepts. Questions involving square roots were somewhat difficult for the student, so next session we will work more with them. In the meantime, I assigned her the math section from the practice test from her prep book, which we will go over next session."
