Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on her science work regarding pedigree charts. Again, she said she just wanted help reviewing the concepts and some of her homework. We also worked on some of her Pythagorean theorem challenge problems. I'm really impressed with her attention to detail!"
"This session, the student and I studied the gas laws and the beginnings of stoichiometry. We worked through a study guide her teacher had provided her, making sure that she could perform problems that demonstrated each point outlined on the study guide. Initially, she had some issue conceptualizing the different units and what they were describing. However, as she worked through the problems she began to contextualize them, and she became comfortable with the problems. I gave her different tips on solving gas law and percent composition problems, and we talked about the general format that the gas law problems will take on her upcoming test."
"In our first session, we covered two sections of the student's science textbook that she will be tested on this Friday: the Inner Planets and the Outer Planets. There are a lot of facts and concepts to understand within this section and the student, though excited about the material (planets are cool after all), needed help to organize her thinking. She had already covered most of the inner planets during her science lesson that day, so we started there. We began by talking through some generalities of the inner planets (small, rocky, closer to the sun) then went over the study questions at the end of the section in her textbook. We talked through each question, and when we got to an answer she wrote it down in her notebook. Once we finished these questions, we reviewed them and took the same approach towards the next section on the outer planets. At the end, we did a review and compare/contrast of the overall characteristics of the inner planets and the outer planets. I also showed her a mnemonic device that can help her remember the planets in order of their orbits: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto*. She demonstrates skill at getting all this material into categories and answering questions that I asked. I think with further help on organizational and study strategies, combined with her overall excitement for the material, she should be set up very well for success."
"We reviewed the student's previous practical examinations that she took this semester and teased out the areas in which she did not perform well. We then developed a study schedule based on our assessment, and she will use this to prepare for her final examination. We then reviewed concepts of respiratory system analogy. She also found a new resource that she will use to assess her progress in her studies."
"Today the student and I covered the first half of her Pelvic Girdle PPT. She was initially apprehensive to tutor online, but after talking through some material and discussing her options, she seems confident that our conversations will be beneficial for her which is the ultimate goal! She has a great attitude and is a real pleasure to work with. As always, I look forward to working with her again soon! "
"Today the student and I focused primarily on content from chapter 7 of the ACE manual. This chapter covered mobility and flexibility assessments (with an emphasis on their objectives, key points of focus, postural deviations that they are used to identify, etc.). First, we reviewed 10 chapter review questions that he answered prior to tutoring, and discussed each question in depth. After reviewing all of these questions, we moved on to a discussion of mobility tests (including bend and lift, hurdle step, shoulder protraction/ retraction, and shoulder internal/ external rotation). For our next session, we will wrap up this content with a discussion of the flexibility tests that we still need to discuss."
