How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

As much as students look forward to summer vacation, parents worry about the dreaded "summer slide," the loss of education most students experience when they're away from the classroom. Without regular instruction, reading, and homework, children tend to slip backwards in their learning. The effect has been studied for more than a hundred years. Fortunately, parents concerned with their children's success can fight the summer slide by keeping their kids mentally active during the break. Varsity Tutors' educational directors are experienced at helping parents of students in Paradise, NV, find independent summer tutors that help their children's intellect grow even when they're not in school.

Children naturally desire to have fun, especially when they do not have to report to homeroom five mornings per week. But left to their own devices, they would not choose intellectually challenging pursuits. If they're not practicing math and reading, their skill level will drop in those subjects. Finding a way to make learning fun is essential to preventing the "summer slide." Let Varsity Tutors help you find an expert summer tutor in Paradise, NV, who can design a plan that will accomplish that goal.

Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Paradise, NV Summer tutoring
At the beginning of our session, the student talked about some of his assignments and projects for his classes. He did not have any papers or assignments for which he would need my assistance. I asked him if he had received study guides for any of his finals, and he said that his teachers had not given them out yet. I suggested that we review his flashcards for American History. We reviewed World War II, and then he showed me some handouts from a unit on the 1950s. I helped refresh his memory by explaining some of the key terms that he could not remember. We talked about the Cold War, Joseph McCarthy, the Soviet Union, and Communism. We also went over the unit on the 1920s and talked about the Scopes Trial and Calvin Coolidge. I used notes from my undergraduate U.S. History courses as a major source. When necessary, I did searches on my phone to provide the student with additional details.

After the student worked through the remainder of her geometry assignment on volumes and lateral surface areas of regular polygons, the session's focus turned toward an interview writing assignment from her English class. The task involved developing a series of open and closed questions, annotating and organizing the responses, and writing a reflective report. For the inquiry portion of the assignment, several discussion prompts were considered portraying problem situations of ethical import, which were written and provided by her English teacher as material for eliciting thought-provoking and character-identifying responses from the interviewee. In considering these prompts, strategies were identified for better formulating and sequentially organizing her interview questions in a clear and coherent way for her respondent, to maximize the quality and to efficiently filter the quantity of the information she receives.

The student has a social studies exam coming up so we went through his study guide, creating flash cards for important terms and events. This took up a majority of our time. In the last few minutes, we went over a few math problems he was having difficulties with.

The student's mom requested that we work on converting decimals to fractions and on long division. We spent 20 minutes online, and he made an A and a B+ on the decimal/ fraction tests. After a quick social studies flashcard break (his choice), we worked on long division using a project-based task we started several weeks ago. We'll continue to work on this each time to review his division skills. I also suggested that he review the times tables, and his mom agreed.
