Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

Paradise, NV SAT Writing and Language tutoring
Today the student worked on the Math section of the SAT. We practiced two methods for solving equations so that we can see which one will be favored in the long run. He had a positive attitude throughout the session and remained engaged in the material. I included strategies to simplify complex solutions. I left the student with instruction to do the first 10 math questions on each math section of the next practice test that I sent. We will go over any errors at our next session and formulate a plan to teach any missing concepts. I do not have any concerns and look forward to our next session.

Today we worked on the reading section of the SAT using practice test #4, specifically starting with the comparative passages section that the student brought up previously. He had a good understanding of the main ideas in each passage, but made several mistakes in answering the questions which could've been easily avoided when examined closer. He is on a good track overall, though still has work to be done. The student struggled in the side-by-side passage, because the language was old and difficult, hindering comprehension. He needs to work on his vocabulary, which of course is most effectively done through continued reading in his free time as well. For homework I have assigned him to complete the remainder of the section as well as the reading section of practice test #1.

Today, both students and I focused on the topic of evolution, looking primarily at taxonomy. After a brief initial discussion, we quickly jumped into a discussion of taxonomy and the specific taxonomic categories that they will likely need to know for the test. We worked our way through the breakdowns on Domains, Kingdoms, and Phyla, determining the key traits of each. We largely focused on tracking the evolutionary patterns of major organ systems (including the nervous system, circulatory system, digestive system, and body symmetry) through the phyla as we moved from more primitive to more derived. After going over this, we spent the final half an hour discussing a couple of practice problems that they had struggled with while reading the 'evolution' section of their book. Both students seem to have a pretty strong understanding of evolution in general, and will mostly need to focus on memorizing taxonomic groups and traits.

Today, she and I focused on tips, tricks and strategies to help her do well on her SAT on Saturday. We first started out by going over the remaining questions of the Writing/Language Arts section I assigned her for homework last week. She did well overall, but she did have trouble with one particular passage. We went over any questions that she got wrong, and I was able to give her explanations as needed. We then went over some tips, tricks and strategies that may help her when she takes her test. I had her write down any tips that she thought would be particularly useful. Then, we tried out some of the strategies on a Reading passage and the Math Non-Calculator section. These tips seemed to help her, and hopefully, she can use them effectively on her test. I also left her three practice tests that she can work on during the week and she might be able to do some time simulated tests.

Today, she worked through another complete reading test, keeping timing in mind. For this test, I gave her a specific order to answer the questions in, to keep her on track using the strategies we have been practicing rather than falling back on bad habits. Her timing and accuracy were very good. We finished up our time by reviewing her math test from last session and talking through the grid in questions for another test.

Today, the student and I continued to work through official practice questions from the Math and English sections of a released exam. He has strong math skills, but he struggles with deciphering some of the more difficult problems. I hope to activate pattern recognition via repetitive, but challenging, problem sets in our next session.
