Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Paradise, NV Reading tutoring
The student liked the joke book that I brought over, so I will be sure to bring more of those in the future. I think that if she can read short narratives that do not require her extended attention, she might enjoy reading enough to give it another chance.

We introduced note-taking strategies for longer informational style writing, like the kind encountered in social studies work and in certain kinds of English writings. Next session we will discuss strategies for long narrative writing, like novels. The student is excited to learn each approach. We read three essays: one essay I completed in front of him, one I read with him and completed together, and one that he completed on his own. His note taking is good, and he understands the main point of writing well. He is good at reviewing material and his memory is sharp. He should continue his reading comprehension practice by completing an editorial each night (apart from 2 non-consecutive rest days).

The student and I did a lot of word work today. First we worked on homophones some more. He read example sentences with homophones and had to pick them out, and then he came up with a list of his own, and then had to write his own sentences, focusing on grammar and punctuation. Next I had him work on some tongue twisters, and he learned the word enunciation. He had a really good time with these, and focusing on pronunciation should help with his fluency. Finally, he learned about alliteration. For practice, we read the poem "Casey at the Bat." First he read the poem aloud and then summarized it. Next, we went through line by line together, looking for alliteration. We finished up the lesson with a few minutes of reading from his Narnia book.

The student and I worked on his math and prepared him for his science test the next day. He needed help working with word problems in his math and turning a visual concept into a spoken phrase. We will focus more on this with some tutoring materials. I'm also trying to encourage him to speak up in class, asking at least one question a day to improve his confidence.
