How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

When your family decides to send a student to a private or parochial school, the High School Placement Test, or HSPT, will be a necessary part of the admissions process. connecting with a tutor to try to help your child prepare for this test is a good idea, especially if he or she is applying to a competitive school or hoping to pursue a scholarship. Many schools use these test results to make decisions on who gets in and who gets funded. Varsity Tutors can connect you with a professional HSPT tutor in Paradise who could teach your student how to study effectively.

Students take the HSPT when they are in eighth grade, preparing to progress to high school. Your child is probably already balancing a heavy workload of homework, class assignments, and special projects. Doing well on the HSPT can cause stress and anxiety for your student, and those types of emotions will be counterproductive. A tutor can make a real difference in your student's confidence level and ability to balance the demands of school and the pressure of test performance. We can match your child with an HSPT tutor in Paradise, NV, who is passionate about the subject and can instill that passion in your student to create a truly enjoyable learning experience.

Today we worked on the essay portion again using essay prompt #3 of the review book. The student seems to do generally well in regards to the essay portion, but could improve (through practice on his own & homework) his ability to pick out the most important tools the authors of prompts use to persuade his audience. Stylistically, his essay is clean and concise, but lacks a little of the flourish that really make it stand out from a typically well-written essay. He should also be careful when he proofreads so that he is able to correct his grammatical errors and stylistically awkward sentences. For homework, I have assigned him to write the essay for prompt #4 using the outline we developed in our session. I think from next session onward, we will be refocusing back into the math and verbal portions of the SAT as his performance in the essay is satisfactory for his target schools.

Today we worked on the math questions we left off with the other day, a reading passage, as well as a few more difficult math questions. So to start, math was pretty good; she definitely has the exponent rules down pat, which is great. I told her to make sure to go over 5, 12, and 16 on the past test (geometry/ratio). Ratios are always a number over another number. Volume of a cube involves cubing, so she needs to make sure she's cubing everything variable she uses. Circumference of a circle only involves multiplying by pi, so working out the math using variables shouldn't be too hard. For the past test, I asked her to go over questions 18 and 20. For reading, this definitely was a more difficult passage just because of how it was written but I think she did a great job with reasoning out the correct answers for the questions. Great session!

Today we worked on the math section. We covered the properties of triangles (area, how to find the height, isosceles and equilateral triangles, Pythagorean Theorem, Pythagorean triplets, 30-60-90 triangles, 45-45-90 triangles), area and circumference of circles, problems involving percents and ratios, and problems involving tables and graphs of data. We worked on practice problems focusing on tables and problems involving percents. She is making progress and is becoming more comfortable with the material the more problems we did, and she is going to continue practicing until our next meeting.

Today we worked on the SAT reading section. The student has improved since we began and has benefitted from the test taking strategies we've discussed. We went over those strategies again today and will evaluate what we need to work on based on the result of the practice tests he's taken. It is important that he get the login information to his tutoring account so that we can go over those tests.
