Session Summaries by Graduate Test Prep Tutors

Paradise, NV Graduate Test Prep tutoring
The student and I began by working through a verbal reasoning section of the test. She did not do as well as she hoped. Her strategy on this section has improved, but she still struggles with some of the harder vocabulary words and the more detailed reading passages. We went over the questions she missed in detail and I continued to encourage her to learn as much vocabulary as possible before the test date. For the last half of the session, we went through a number of quantitative reasoning questions. Her skills have improved on this part of the test and she is now able to answer a majority of the questions with no assistance. I walked her through some of the more difficult problems and illustrated the solution when needed.

The student and I did a diagnostic session that reviewed the two main portions of the test. She is very comfortable with the reading comprehension, and the vocab is just going to be a matter of memorizing words. We will continue to work a lot on the math.

The student and I did a mixed verbal review across all question types. He is doing great and has a really strong foundation. He should continue with vocab review and consistent practice. He should also attempt to take a full length exam one time per week between now and test day. Keep up the good work!

The student and I discussed her progress on verbal before we worked on GRE math. We did some practice problems together and covered square numbers, rules of exponents, PEMDAS, number theory, slope intercept form, and a few other things. I sent her some links to helpful information she can use while practicing on her own. She has more math concepts to learn before taking the test, but she is making good progress.

The student and I discussed her study methods and her recent frustration while studying. She is going to study most of her time using the pomodoro method (25 minutes of studying, 5 minute break) and when she feels frustrated, she is going to take a walk. We want her to start associating GRE questions with more positive feelings of accomplishment rather than negative feelings of frustration and anxiety. She is also going to read before bed to help her vocabulary and reading comprehension, in addition to reducing her stress levels. We then went over the Algebra and Geometry problems that she struggled with, going over strategies for each section, especially focusing on when to plug in and when to solve an equation. For homework she is going to do both timed and untimed practice for verbal and math.

The student and I discussed his education to date, and his plans for a PhD. While we will eventually discuss and practice all the sections of the GRE, we decided to prioritize quantitative. We nearly got through chapter 4. For next session, he will complete the remaining problems from chapter 5 and possibly more from chapter 6 in guide to the GRE. He was very engaged and quick to jump in with his thoughts and questions.
