We began the session by reviewing the difference between "this" and "that" when pointing out or asking about objects, as well as when to use "much" and "many." We also reviewed vocabulary surrounding travel, including from, to, arrive, still at, etc. We then moved on to the negative simple present (I want apples--> I do not want apples) before moving onto comparative descriptors, which we spent the majority of our time on. We read about, used, and identified several different useful comparative descriptors, like big, bigger, biggest, small, small, smallest, short, shorter, shortest, etc. We finished with a quick review of car parts and vocabulary on the road, which will set us up to continue discussing cars and directions next week, in preparation for the student's DMV test.

We focused on spelling today as well as reading. The student's spelling list for this week consisted of homonyms. We made flashcards for each word and after he had completed his homework (writing each word three times), we went over the flashcards. For each word, I had him tell me the meaning and use it in a sentence so I could be sure he knew the difference between the spelling of each word. We then moved on to reading. He read one more chapter in "The Truth About Bats." We finished the session by going over the word and phonogram flashcards from last time. He still needed help with some of them, but he's showing improvement and seems to be coming out of his shell. I let him keep the spelling flashcards we made today so he could practice them on his own.

Today, we reviewed what we covered last week as a steady progression of terms and vocabulary, and we learned new material, including time, dates, weather, birthdays, months, and how to ask for help. I found the student to be very responsive and engaged. We did role play exercises so he could practice his English in a real life scenario like a restaurant, library, supermarket, etc. I left him some homework to further practice how to ask for help.

This session, the student and I covered the second myth she was assigned, and we continued to review the same concepts and literary devices that we have covered so far in class: plot structure, characterization, emotional flow, and style. We also spoke about the author's intent in the creation of fables (i.e., stories with morals), in addition to nature symbolism as it related to the way ancient Greeks conceptualized the natural world.
