Today, we spent a lot of time on writing strategies for the test. We used some of the student's own writing as a way to revise his thoughts in order to construct arguments and support them. I think he learned a great deal about applying the strategies: thesis, topic sentences, evidence, etc. Also, we spent some time on grammar. Regarding this, he simply needs to slow down and look more critically. When I show him the correct answer, he knows it, so it's just a matter of getting him to see it. Overall, he is progressing well!

In tonight's session, the student reviewed 1st and 2nd grade sight words. He read them all accurately and quickly. Great job! He worked on filling in sentences with both 1st and 2nd grade words and reading the completed sentences/ paragraph. He did an excellent job and was able to sound out words - i.e. studying, since, and chili. We worked on stretching a sentence and he wrote a detailed sentence using chat. He just needs to work on some correct punctuation when writing. We'll work on that in our next session. He worked on some homework he has for tomorrow and did very well. He is always a pleasure to teach!

We covered techniques for reading comprehension and evaluating information in reading various kinds of nonfiction. We discussed making judgments, distinguishing between fact and opinion, and recognizing when you cannot prove something is true. The student still needed help a bit with making inferences, but is making great progress reading more difficult text. We tried some material from the language arts tryout test 1, and will return to some of the difficult concepts later. We discussed examples of fiction books, characters, and main ideas. We also played a phonics game.

The student and I got to know each other during our first session and we talked about what she likes and doesn't like about reading. We discussed her interests so that I can select readings to work on with her that she is interested in. I also did a visualizing activity with her to help her connect with the readings. She read a short story and then I had her illustrate what she saw in her mind as she was reading. This helped her comprehend the readings and make connections with what she was reading.

We went over story structure today, which is similar to what the student is doing in class. However, we added some vocabulary including characterization, sensory language, etc. She is working on a new creative writing assignment in order to be cognizant and build upon these story structure elements. We related all story elements to other stories she has already read, such as The Fault in Our Stars. She still has a habit of putting quotations together automatically in the first draft. We will address it when she comes back next week. It is important that she produce more work at this point, and then we will edit in the second draft. She is getting more comfortable with writing.
