How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

The American College Testing (ACT) is one of the most important tests your high schooler will take before graduation. This exam is often required by prestigious colleges and universities for admittance consideration. If your child has his or her heart set on a particular college or university, it will be pivotal to have a great performance on this test. A personalized tutor can try to help your child gain confidence in skills and abilities, as well as brush up on the concepts and subjects covered in this exam. The Varsity Tutors educational directors can find you an expert ACT tutor in Paradise, NV, to cater to your child's specific needs.

The ACT takes about three and a half hours to complete and a composite score can range from 1 to 36. It includes sections in English, math, reading, and science, with an optional writing section. This exam challenges your child's analysis, interpretation, algebra, geometry, and reading comprehension skills, amongst other things. If you want your child to truly do well on the ACT while feeling confident and prepared, an experienced tutor may be able to help. Private sessions that cater to your child's learning style while efficiently making the most of the study time together will keep your child motivated and confident in his or her ability to score well. Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

Paradise, NV ACT tutoring
The student and I reviewed her science, reading, and math homework. She should be able to do very well in science. I expect her to miss very few questions on the remaining portions of her homework. We had a mini-lesson to review her approach to reading passages, which should help her tackle the harder inference questions on her remaining homework passages. I've also assigned a light load for math: only corrections.

The student and I reviewed the questions she missed in the writing practice test that she completed for homework. Next, we continued to work on all ACT sections. For math, we focused on analyzing graphs, geometry questions on 2D shapes, simplifying expressions with variables, and more. For science, we worked on biology and physics. We also began another full-length ACT test from previous years, and worked on the writing and reading sections. She did excellently in all sections, especially the verbal sections.

The student and I reviewed the results of her last ACT, and formulated strategies for moving forward and achieving her target score of 30 (composite). We surmised that the best strategy is to improve her English score to at least a 32. If she does this and maintains her scores in the other sections, she'd reach her goal. We then started working right away on the English section. Her score report indicated that she can improve most on the mechanical/ usage aspects of English (as opposed to rhetorical questions). Throughout our session, she did miss questions regarding mechanics and usage the most (and one rhetorical question), so we're going to practice more on those. I'm giving her an English section as homework.

The student and I reviewed the results of her timed math test and walked through how she could maximize her time on the test. We discussed how to shave off time and have extra left over to go back and look over questions skipped. Next week she will attempt a paper test that I will bring and take it in a 25 minute time frame. For homework, she will complete a science practice test with the goal of finishing the 40 questions in an hour.

The student and I reviewed the revision of his first essay draft. We addressed how to construct a specific and nuanced thesis statement, incorporate evidence and examples more effectively, and utilize sophisticated language. We reviewed our discussion of inference and function questions on the Reading section and discussed the characteristics of global questions before working through a sample problem. Lastly, we continued our discussion of plane geometry concepts and worked through some sample problems concerning lines, angles, and triangles. I've instructed him to complete another sample essay and a Reading section prior to our next session.

The student and I reviewed the science section he completed for homework. We spent the majority of the time drilling the English questions he needed help with last session, and a few math formulas. Exponents in particular were a focus. We also worked on conflicting viewpoints for science. I assigned a full test to be completed for next week's Monday session.
