Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session, the student and I finalized some college applications. She also completed a summer essay and a personal experience essay. Next session, we will continue finalization of more applications."
"The student and I spent about one hour working on his application essay, which he had revised and sent over the weekend. It was much improved and his additional writing revealed what was missing. I made suggestions and he agreed. I wrote on his document and emailed it to him. Then we discussed prepositions and he performed an exercise which clarified where he might need more grammar work. I will continue to probe his grammar and devise exercises. We also looked over my sheet of business-themed essay prompts, and we talked about how to write about one of them. The student's homework is to finish his application essay and development a short response to a prompt. He also set himself an assignment: to create several sentences that contain prepositions. I think this is apropos given today's work. We will meet in person on Thursday to review this work."
"Today the student and I met to discuss her essays for her transfer application. She spent some time brainstorming possible topics for each of the essays. For instance, in the essay about reasons that she wanted to transfer. We then talked about ways that those desires related to her long-term career plans. I also helped her to brainstorm for stories that she could use to demonstrate some of her points. By the end of the session, she had ideas and bullet points for each of her essays. She also needed to send in a resume to some of the schools. She had never written a resume before, so we discussed content and formatting for a resume. I sent her a packet of sample resumes to review later. I especially wanted to go through her experiences and see what she should highlight. She has strong leadership experience both in high school and college as well as several awards. She will write drafts of her essays, and send them to me by Sunday morning. I will meet with her Sunday afternoon to discuss her essays before she turns them in on Monday."
