Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I reviewed the material for his upcoming quiz tomorrow. This quiz will cover systems of equations, specifically, how to graph them and how to solve them through substitution or elimination. Before starting on the actual review, I helped the student complete his homework due tomorrow. Fortunately, his homework for the next section was based entirely on concepts to be tested tomorrow. The only section that gave him trouble was graphing. His biggest issue was rushing through and forgetting negative signs in his graphs' slopes. I advised him to slow down and check his work, but overall, he seems well prepared for his quiz tomorrow."
"During today's session, the student and I covered some of the work from his Algebra 2 course. Our work focused on roots. Working from his homework assignment, we simplified radical expressions, discussed negative roots when indexes are odd, and why even roots would never yield a real root. I took this as an opportunity to introduce him to imaginary numbers, which he will undoubtedly see in his class in the upcoming weeks. As part of today's work, we also reviewed how to solve quadratic equations through factoring. The student finished his assignment. In particular, he succeeded in solving equations in which terms had denominators greater than one."
"We discussed her last quiz, which was curved. The mistakes were small and easily corrected. We are now covering I and deciphering when an answer is real, imaginary or non-existent. The student seems more confident and more at ease with this material. She has a quiz on Tuesday."
"This session the student had a packet to do as review for his chapter 4 exam tomorrow. Since it was just a review of solving inequalities, he breezed through it. The one struggle he had was writing out equations instead of just doing mental math."
"The student has an exam this week. We went through her packet and did the practice questions that included solving equations and the use of imaginary numbers. Excellent session. The student is well organized and has a strong understanding of the course material."
"The student completed her summer math packet today. We went over simplifying radicals, converting radicals to exponents (and vice versa), and more factoring practice, including the sum and difference of cubes. What she struggles with is seeing the patterns of how the more complicated problems are several simple problems put together, or written in a different manner. When it's something she's seen before, she knows what to do, but when it changes, it throws her off."
