"Today the student and I edited his personal statement draft for grammar/mechanical errors as well as places that could be improved more generally. We discussed sections of the essay where it would be beneficial to change or adapt the tone, and we brainstormed different ways of phrasing key ideas and concepts he needs to include. Additionally, we created a basic outline for what the remainder of the statement will look like. I asked him to decide how and where he thinks it best to create a more emotional tone in certain sections we selected, and he's also sending a draft of the essay to his professor. When we meet again, we'll deal with any input the professor may have and work on how best to round out the essay."
"Today the student made some great progress on his supplemental essays. We tried finding out some information about the university's service opportunities. His homework is to call the university to find answers to his questions so he can work on his supplemental essays. He also should call the other university of interest to find out if there are supplemental essays that he needs to submit with his application. By the time of our next meeting, Saturday, he should have completed drafts for the supplementals and figured out what essays he needs to complete for the other university."
"After reading through and commenting on her personal statement, we discussed a few places where she needed improvement. While the overall structure of her essay was sound, she needed to launch into the topic of her statement -- her eventual goal of becoming an addiction counselor -- earlier in the paper. I also pointed out a few places where she should probably bring up her specific goal and her motivation for completing that goal in order to retain the train of thought throughout. She also had a few places where her meaning was not entirely clear, and we discussed how to fix those issues. After talking, she was ready to finish revising her personal statement and submit it with her application."
