Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did spelling homework, including sorting words and changing words from past tense to active. We also reviewed her spelling words and read the first chapter of her AR book."
"*Wrote alphabet (upper/lower case) -Issues with writing "p" backwards, so practiced writing correctly *Practiced spelling/writing several sight words -She shows much improvement with this *Wrote sentences using sight words -Again, she shows much improvement *Reviewed/wrote spelling words -Spelled them all correctly on the first blind try *Wrote numbers 1-30 -Issues with "9" which she writes like the letter "p," so practiced writing 9 correctly *Addition/subtraction (wrote each problem) -Shows improvement but still needs work with larger problems, such as 9+8, 12+8, 20-7, etc. *Practiced adding coins -Still needs a lot of work. She knows the values of the coins but will use different coin values, such as use 0.10 when she is counting pennies, when counting It's been a pleasure working with this student. She's bright and polite. She will continue to improve, particularly if she works on adding coins and reviewing sight words on a regular basis."
"The student and I had a busy hour together. First, we worked on word families with the short /a/ sound. Using plastic letters, she created words rhyming with /ap/, /at/, /an/, and /am/. She really liked the activity. I will repeat it next week with a different vowel. Second, we worked on sections from her workbook. She needed some reminders to slow down and take her time with the reading and writing exercises. Third, we focused on her spelling words for the week. She wrote them in sentences, practiced spelling them orally, and then took a pretend spelling test. She responds well to praise and positive reinforcement."
"Today was spent going over the math assignment given as homework. This homework assignment went much better than last week based on his general understanding and retention. There was a section that required some critical thinking, but we both figured out a proper method for figuring out an answer. We talked about discussing his English paper next week and also devoting a small amount of time to Spanish."
"Today we completed the Article of the Week for History class, wrote a vignette about her, and worked on our vocabulary packet, which included completed sentences, synonyms, and antonyms. I'm happy to hear about the 97% on the History test. We'll work more on Algebra. Today's assignment was for math."
"Today we covered subjects from unit 2, and by the end we were able to cover a total of five. The student did well today, but he did seem to have trouble with factoring by grouping. After asking him why, it turns out that he has never been shown how to do this before. Because of this we will have to cover this again next time, since this is a crucial bit of subject matter, and we can't have him going on without knowing it. Other than that the session went well, and I think we covered a lot."
