Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we continued to cover math. We reviewed polynomials, absolute values, and the difference between ratios, fractions, and percents. The student did very well with geometry and the Pythagorean theorem, and I introduced the concepts of sectors and solving algebraic equations with consecutive variables."
"Today, we covered her PSAT practice test results. She got a 206 and did very well in every section. Then we worked slowly through SAT sections, focusing on strategy. She still has trouble putting together complicated word problems. In grammar, she's occasionally missing idioms, and while her vocabulary is excellent, the occasional sentence completion questions are tripping her up. Still, she is overall very prepared for the test."
"Review of writing with dress code prompt. Introduction of roadmapping technique for Reading section. Discussion of scheduling and proper prioritization of practice work."
"The student and I split our time between writing and reading questions. He did very well conceptually, but just sped through the writing sections' questions, and missed a lot of easy answers. We talked about slowing down and not missing the low hanging fruit in that situation. In reading, he is progressing significantly."
"The student and I split up our session into three different parts to work on math, writing, and reading comprehension. Today, we focused on probability and Venn diagrams when working on math. The student does very well with the writing section. We might take a full session to focus on math next weekend on Saturday or Sunday."
"The student and I started by going through an overview of the language and writing section. I highlighted commonly tested material and useful strategies. He has a solid understanding of grammar; he especially seems familiar with a lot of basic topics that appear on the test. I had him do three different grammar passages. He did well with all of them. I also reviewed a few more technical grammar issues. I shared a few useful online resources for learning grammar; these will be helpful for preparing for the test, and he can use them in school, as well. We then went back to the reading section. I had him do questions from two different science passages. He did well with the charts and graphs. I also had him go through another pair of passage. He seems to be learning and applying strategies quickly."
