Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the math section of the GRE, focusing on numeric properties, arithmetic, and some algebra. We'll pick back up where we left off last week and continue with a review of algebraic concepts on the GRE. She has a strong grasp of the content. With some additional content review and strategy sessions, she is well positioned to score well on the quant section!"
"We went over the student's diagnostic and identified that in the math section she was primarily struggling with geometry concepts. We went over special right triangles, and the volume and surface area of cubes, cylinders, and cones. As we went over the formulas and did practice problems, she became much more confident with the material and she was able to solve problems quickly. We then discussed strategies for the "analyze an issue" essay. For homework, she is going to write a sample essay in 30 minutes and use the strategies we discussed. We also discussed the structure of the test overall, and decided she should take a full-length test on a computer so she could become familiar with the testing platform and using the online calculator. Overall, it was a great session!"
"We went over the verbal portion of the test that the student took. She appears to have more difficulties with reading comprehension than with vocabulary, so she is going to focus on that for her next lesson."
"We went over triangles, specifically special triangles. I spent a lot of time on these difficult questions, so she would better understand the GRE format, and by the end, that effort paid off."
"We went over various mathematics problems. The student is very skillful at solving problems by plugging in well chosen numbers and using these to determine relevant information. One minor improvement that could be made with respect to this is that when it does not matter what particular numbers you plug in, you should pick whatever numbers make the problem the easiest. She should take a little time (15-20 seconds) to think qualitatively about the problem before she begins plugging in numbers, as there is sometimes a simpler or more obvious way to solve the problem. She has good mathematical intuition and is exceptional at making accurate educated guesses quickly."
"We went through more vocab and strategies for Latin roots and prefixes. The current plan is to have him do his math assessment this weekend in time for me to lesson plan for next week. He understands that if he doesn't do that, we'll continue working on the verbal instead. We're seeing good progress on the strategy of finding clues in the question. More vocab drilling will help it stick."
