Session Summaries by German Tutors

Palmdale, CA German tutoring
Lots of grammar! This was a preparation for an exam, so we focused on grammar rather than conversational practice. Specifically, we reviewed the future, the future perfect, as well as the formation of the present subjunctive and the imperfect subjunctive, and its three most common uses. We also talked about the difference between verbal moods (indicative v. subjunctive) and verbal tenses (past, present, future, etcetera).

LESSON: 1) I reviewed the Subjunctive verb tense with the student. This is what she is doing her Spanish class now. She needed help with the "Wishes / Hope"ù phrases that are used in the Subjunctive. I went over the "UWEIRDO"ù acronym to refresh her memory of the uses of the Subj in Span. 2) I checked the HW she had already done with this verb tense, and there were many corrections. I explained all of these sentences in detail and why the verb was used in each scenario. After I did the corrections and explanations, she understood perfectly when to use this verb. 3) We went over vocabulary of household items, appliances, rooms, etc. I had her repeat the words after me. Then we played "Jeopardy"ù with furniture, rooms, and other key phrases. Her brother also played and he thoroughly enjoyed it. This was a fun way to review and work on vocabulary retention and recall. The student did a beautiful job today. She is a quick learner and retains grammar rules when only given an explanation for them once. She says her last test after we met was so much easier for her. She is doing a magnificent job! HW: I told her to do flashcards for vocabulary for this chapter. She said she will review everything we covered today.

The student had a review sheet on concepts learned for an upcoming writing assessment, including verbs in the imperative tu form and vocabulary for navigation and giving directions based on landmarks. We reviewed vocabulary from a website, and I gave the student the URL for further review and assessment tools on her textbook's website. The student translated several sentences from English to Spanish and completed a mock writing prompt in preparation for her test.

The student and I reviewed a bit of what we went over the last time we met and then moved forward. We did a bit of conversation; I asked her questions and she worked through the proper way to express herself. We primarily talked about the holidays. Then we worked on telling time and incorporating that into her routine.

The student's class is having a cultural food day tomorrow, so she had to come up with a brief speech about the yucca plant. She was prepared, having written it in English, and we spent time translating it together. Additionally, we translated a beef brisket recipe into Spanish, as she is making that tonight and bringing it to class as a side dish tomorrow. She feels very comfortable and confident with the material we worked on today. She has a quiz next Monday, so we are planning to meet on Sunday to review as per usual.
