"We went over Algebra concepts for the ACT and had the student take a short practice test to see where she was at. There was not really any concepts that she did not understand and she just needed some practice to refresh her mind."
"The student completed for extra practice last week-- 3 science passages, 5 English passages, 2 reading passages, and 10 math problems. We started the session discussing a few math topics: graphing familiar equations with x-axis inverses, y-axis inverses, compressions, stretching, & up/down/left/right shifts, systems of equations, and congruent angles relative to parallel lines. Next, we worked on Reading. She had completed 2 passages (social science & humanities) for extra practice. She did well with the humanities passage (8/10). She had a little trouble understanding the second passage but still managed to get all of the questions she did answer correct (7/7). We are continuing to work on not focusing on the lack of clarity, but on the parts of the passage that are addressed specifically in the questions. When she does that, clearly she excels. Lastly, we covered English. She does well with the English passages (67/75 for the entire section). She has 2 science passages, 2 reading passages, and some math to work on for extra practice."
"In this session, we worked on reading. We worked through three reading passages, and I timed her as she read each passage. She stayed within the time limit for one of the passages, but she used about one minute more than ideal to read the other two passages. We talked about how to answer questions on specific details from the text, and we worked on going back to the passage to look up relevant information before reading possible answers. She did an excellent job going back to the passage when a question involved specific details or quoted text. For a few questions, she had trouble finding the right place in the passage to look. We talked about marking changes in topic in the passage and key words and phrases as she reads so she could better find relevant information. In general, she did well in questions that involved looking up information from the text. She had more trouble with certain questions involving interpreting and making inferences from the text. She practiced restating the main idea of a sentence in her own words then looking for the answer that best matched. When debating between two answers, she can also think about how the two answers differ and which one has the most support from the text. She will continue to practice individual reading sections by timing herself. We also briefly went over the timing for the science section, and we will continue working on science and English in the next session."
"Today we worked on reading, science, and math. The first hour was spent only on the reading section. The main point of emphasis is getting him to ground his answers in the text, which requires him to think more deeply about the problems. He still finds this very difficult, but it's important that he practice doing this even if it means reading the passage 5 or 6 times before tackling the problems. For the science section, once he understands the passages, he does fine, but sometimes he fails to grasp the significance of graphs and figures. For math, we worked again on average problems. There's still a lot of work to be done, but I think he's starting to grasp the concept."
"Today we worked on the English section of the ACT. We went through question by question, and I helped the student with any question she did not understand. Overall, she did very well. I also gave her a math section to work on this week if she has time, and if not, we will focus on it during the coming session."
"Today we worked on the math section of the ACT. The student still needs a lot of help reviewing basic math concepts and models, but is showing good improvement and motivation. Next session, we will focus on the unit circle. In preparation, he should try and review the unit circle."
