Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began by reviewing the practice essay for homework. We talked about its strengths and weaknesses and considered how it could be improved so that it would earn a higher score. Then we rewrote certain aspects together, turning it into an essay that would earn a 6. We talked a little more about the student's list of examples for his body paragraphs, and we decided that for homework, the student would revise and add to this list to make it more well-rounded. He has shown great improvement on the essay section, but he needs to continue to focus on using specific, detailed examples and connecting these examples back to his thesis. This will be the key in raising his average essay score. He also needs to write timed practice essays as frequently as possible. After this, we began working on passage-based reading questions. We talked about active reading and about the importance of identifying authors' arguments, tones, and attitudes as one reads. Next, we practiced reading actively and completed some practice problems together. He did a very good job with the problems, but he needs to try to be a little more open to applying active reading strategies. For homework, the student will finish the questions we were working on and continue to practice active reading."
"The student and I made some great progress today. We focused on the critical reading section of the SAT and looked at both the sentence completion and passage identification questions. For the former type of questions, we went over signal words and punctuation as well as relationship identification between two vocabulary choices. She appeared to grasp these concepts well, and I expect her to have more confidence when approaching these types of questions now that she knows how to isolate the important parts of the question. For the latter type of questions, we went over how the test uses particular phrases to signal an answer as well as how to read around a selected answer to better gain the context of the question. Again, the student seemed to grasp these concepts very well. It seems these strategies were previously unused by her before, so I expect that they can help her a great deal. For tomorrow's session, she will complete the Part II Critical Reading section to better understand the psychology behind this section as well as complete (if she has the time to) sections 5 and 9 of the first practice test."
"Today we did more sentence correction practice, then we did a practice passage reading to cover basic test reading strategies and finished with math challenge problems."
