The students reviewed days of the week, and prepositions, which were introduced during their last lesson. Then they learned about "whose" and practiced asking and answering questions, using clothing and personal items to illustrate possession: "Whose shirt is this/that?" "It's my/his shirt." The students also learned and practiced a new song ("Row row row your boat...") in order to introduce adverbs and reinforce the imperatives introduced earlier (via the "Simon Says" game). Finally, a few chess problems at the end allowed them to apply the chess vocabulary and related verbs (moves, advances, retreats, takes, eats, etc.) in the simple present.

As per my assessment of this student last week, I know he has an aversion to the creative, artistic, and oftentimes fictional. I had him look at two different paintings which have been very influential in Europe and America. The purpose of this assignment was for him to tell a story based on the painting he saw. At first, he struggled a bit trying to ensure that he gave me no facts, but instead only his version of what this story tells. Overall, he did a wonderful job.

My session with the student today began with reading. She and I read an Elephant and Piggie book titled "I Will Take a Nap!" Then she read aloud "Cat the Cat Who Is That?" by Mo Willems. This book is in the same format as "Hound the Hound What's that Sound?" She did not hesitate to read this book, which I find encouraging. She and I also read "Hop on Pop" by Dr. Seuss. We read this book aloud together by taking turns. I feel her reading has improved since I started working with her. She and I used letter cubes from the game Boggle to do more word work today. During our math time, she and I practiced making tens with the game I taught her in our previous session (using Uno cards with the digits 1 through 9). We also reviewed her math homework. She specifically asked for help with the story problems in her math homework. I read each problem aloud, and we discussed how to solve them.

The student and I played a fun "Short Vowel Game". She is doing very well differentiating between the sounds of short "a" and short "e". She is consistently self correcting her errors when reading. We also practiced her sight words and played a sight word game. She is doing very well with her sight words. We did a lot of reading, and finished with a math coloring worksheet which she LOVES. She is doing great using a number line to add and subtract numbers. Math is definitely her strength.
