In our first session, the student and I worked together to assess his familiarity with the alphabet. He was able to write 2 letters (X and O) independently, follow an example to write 10 more, and was unfamiliar with the rest of the alphabet. The student did a great job getting through our first session.
The other student and I reviewed his vocabulary from last week and for the first time in a while practiced reading fluency in wordlists, sentences, and passages of controlled text from step 10.1, which focuses on the suffixes -ice, -ate, and -ine.

Review of the semester of materials via a student/teacher supplied practice exam. Stressed that work had to be checked if time allowed, and the student seemed quite competent with all of the problems, even ones he had gotten wrong when asked to recheck them. Hopefully, the method by which I taught him to check his solutions catches a few cases where he may slip up in the exam today.

The student and I focused on conversation today; We each shared our backgrounds in medicine and then we discussed medical education systems. We also discussed casual study resources (watching English-language movies with subtitles turned on; reading magazines or newspapers and underlining unfamiliar words; medical nonfiction) and formal grammar and vocabulary guides.

We reviewed the geometry and trigonometry information again that the student will need to quickly recall during the exam. There was marked improvement from the last session in his clear and quick recall of the material. We will continue to test his grasp of that material along with new information as well. The new information we presented in this session followed directly from the review we did of conditions for congruent and similar triangles. That new material was a simple and quick extension in comparing similar triangles and what it means for angle measures and side lengths. We then moved on to evaluating his methods and abilities in the science section of the exam. We will be spending our next session continuing to explore tricks for handling the different ways the science material is presented in the exam.
