The student took a practice writing MC section for his homework, and his score would have translated to about a 600. We are aiming for a 650 on this section, so we will work to get a few more questions correct.

We went over the student's practice SAT essay, and discussed both syntactical and conceptual changes. Then we discussed how to use these changes in future SAT essays. After that, we went over a brief essay brainstorm assignment I gave her, and I offered feedback on her responses. We discussed how to add a "so what" to a thesis--meaning, how do we make it clear to the reader why our thesis is important? Lastly, we did a practice sentence-improvement section, incorporating the feedback I gave her on her previous practice sets.

The student and I started by discussing her homework essay. Then we finished up our example brainstorming exercise. We spent the rest of the session working on body paragraph writing strategies. We're going to work on revising and improving paragraphs in future as this worked well today.

We spent a considerable amount of time today reviewing a practice essay that the student had written. This essay was better than the last she wrote. It had a particularly clear argument and good structure, though her grammar and use of examples could be stronger. We then spent about forty minutes practicing and discussing practice problems from the writing section. We completed our time with some practice problems from the math section. If she took the test today, I am convinced that her writing score would be better than it was the last time she took the SAT. Our main task now will be to keep practicing so that she does her best when she takes the test in a month. While she may continue to show improvement, I feel that our main goal now is mental preparedness, which continued practice will help with.

The student and I had another highly productive meeting this past Sunday. During our customary review of everything covered in the last session, he thoroughly articulated strategies for each of the three question types of the writing section. I filled in a couple blanks where necessary -- explaining the two-part criteria of grammatical accuracy and smoothness of read for a correct answer with improving sentences, noting that things like hooks and transitions are common focal points on improving paragraphs, etc. He didn't need a tremendous amount of refreshment on this subject. But emphasizing the importance of review also gave me a chance to harp on how critical it is for students to stay on top of their ACT practice -- to not let more than a couple days go by without working on it. When we went over his homework, the student's scores reflected his verbal understanding. Out of 46 total questions assigned for homework, he missed four, all of which ranked high in perceived difficulty. On the rare misses he did have, I was usually able to clear up any questions pretty quickly. This segment of the lesson gave us a chance to drive home key guidelines of this section, such as the test-makers' preference for the shortest answer, the prevalence of the "no mistake" answer and basic time management for the section. We did a few more practice rounds just to ensure that everything was totally sympatico, and again, his scores suggested that it was. We shifted gears for the last chunk of the session so that I could look over a prospective college essay. I was, generally speaking, very impressed with the fact that a writer so young could have such a distinct voice and style. His grammar and prose could use a bit of touching up and tightening, and I plan to give him some extended notes on the assignment, as he will also be submitting this to his English teacher.

Today, we focused on writing. We went over the results of the writing diagnostic test she'd taken last week and reviewed all the concepts she'd had trouble with, including misplaced modifiers, ambiguous pronouns, comma splices, numbers agreement, etc. Then she took two practice writing sections from the most recent review book. On the second practice test, she scored 21/35 correctly. She's great at the paragraph-based questions, but still has trouble with some of the agreement questions, especially when the subject of the sentence is unclear. Before our next session, she'll be using materials to continue reviewing. I'm also sending her a summary of my writing section tips and an explanation of the most common types of questions.
