"At today's session with the student, he brought to me a draft of an essay on Hamlet that he wrote for his AP English class. The essay asked him to evaluate the play from 4 different perspectives: feminism, philosophy/morals, Freudian Psychology, and General Psychology. After reading through his draft, I felt that the student has some very good ideas relating to these 4 themes, and he found some great supports/references from the play to embody these 4 themes. The only major changes I made to his draft were some grammatical and semantic revisions. Otherwise, I was very impressed with what he had written. We also briefly discussed one of his college essays. He has not written the essay yet, but he showed me the prompt. It asked him to discuss any person (living, dead, or fictional) who he'd like to meet, and why. He provided me with some of his reflections on this question, and we started to brainstorm ideas for his actual essay."
"Reviewed/edited latest draft of Comm App - Finished a new draft that is 98% final. Reviewed minor tweaks to Comm App Essay that will customize it for the College State Application. Reviewed/revised special essays/material. Went over revised list of target schools with their due dates."
"In today's session, the student and I reviewed his school supplements save for two sentences he wanted to take further time to think about. We focused on using every possible opportunity to show the school who he is as a person and why he's an amazing candidate for the school. For example, in his "5 characteristics of a successful person" essay, we worked on finding personal examples of how he learned about each trait and integrating them into his list. For next session, he is going to draft his college supplement, which we created a basic outline for at the end of the session. We also created a schedule for finishing his supplements before the holiday!"
"The student and I worked on completing his summary that we started at his last lesson. He is continuing to improve on his summary writing skills."
"The student and I worked on finishing his paper today. We re-read the paper looking for cohesion and making sure each section strongly supported his thesis. Then, we reviewed how to correctly use footnotes and how to compose a bibliography. I think the result is a solid paper that shows that he has taken a lot of time to consider sources critically. Well done!"
"The student and I worked on her presentation for class tomorrow on starting foreign language education earlier and problems with the current U.S. system. We also worked on editing her draft of her paper. She practiced her presentation out loud and for homework, since she was asked to practice several more times and to time herself to make sure she was still falling within requirements. I also asked for her to draft her introduction and conclusion paragraphs before session next week so we could fine tune her final draft before it's due next Thursday."
