"Session Nine Tutoring Review During the student's eighth session we focused on Tutoring Goal(s) 1, 3, 5, and 6, which involved problem solving, reinforcing studying algebra, developing problem solving techniques, building confidence, and reviewing her homework assignments. Below is a synopsis of the topics we reviewed: We reviewed the basic functions and their graphs as well as the properties of the graphs. We reviewed and practiced how to solve word problems and how to create equations from the information given. We practiced solving linear equations and multivariable equations. We advanced ahead of the class by beginning to solve piecewise functions. We began graphing piecewise functions. Homework and our Plan for Session VIII: Our next session is scheduled for Sunday at 11am. I asked her to review her homework for tonight and write out any areas that she still may feel unsure or confused about. I asked her to take the time to review the chapters in her book along with her lecture notes. I asked her to review the textbook chapters covering piecewise functions and the problem solving techniques that we discussed today. Sunday we will have a brief overview of any concepts that she may not understand from her homework, and then we will focus on new problems from any assigned homework. Notes: She picked up on the new material quickly, and I am excited that she is ahead of her class. She seemed to believe piecewise functions would be difficult, but after practice she was comfortable with solving the equations and graphing the solutions. There was some lingering hesitation with inclusion and non-inclusion notation, and we will go over these concepts more in the future to reinforce them. I enjoyed working with the student, and she is progressing well!"
"The student and I developed a strategy for setting up problems and calculating simple interest for various types of savings scenarios."
"In today's session, I tutored the student in solving problems involving types of triangles. By the end of the session, he was able to solve the problems correctly."
"The student and I reviewed for her upcoming test on graphing functions, inverses, and inequalities. Overall, she showed strong retention of the relevant concepts, only needing a little prompting to jog her memory, and she also didn't make many rushed arithmetic mistakes either."
"The student requested the session today because he has a test on Wednesday. So, we used a review practice that was available where we went through graphing trigonometric functions, solving trigonometric equations, and performing modeling. For the latter, we solved a Ferris wheel problem first modeling in cosine, and later I sent him by email a version using sine function. He understood the concepts and methods of solution but still found the Ferris wheel a bit challenging in comparison with the other problems. Overall, the wins from this session are that he performed a review, and he is ready for the test."
"In this session, we covered polar and rectangular coordinates and the conversion between the two. Using online resources, we were able to obtain more clear formulas than what the teacher provided. Again, the student also went over some of the challenge problems assigned by the teacher. He was able to make it through the homework very easily and systematically by the end of the session."
