Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over math homework (place value with numbers up to 29) and did addition and subtraction word problems."
"The student read from his book for a bit. He then did a solid chunk of work in math focusing on sets. We spent some time reviewing "half past" in time. We then read about the rain forest and discussed the animals that live there."
"Tonight, Student 1 worked on reading fluency and did missing addend activities using an educational website. Student 2 also worked on missing addend activities on the website before transitioning to reading comprehension strategies using another educational website. At the end of the session, both students worked on sight word fluency practice and completed their math homework. Student 1 has improved in reading fluency. Student 2 had difficulty finding the missing addend in addition problems, but after additional practice, was able to figure it out. Both students were very motivated, which positively impacted the quality of their work (especially Student 1!). Both are going to continue to work on sight word fluency this week. Student 2 is trying to identify 20 sight words in a minute, while Student 1 is trying to identify 15 sight words in a row without a mistake. Both are progressing!"
"We worked particularly on math word problems this week. He had scored poorly on previous tests in that area, so we worked on thinking through the problem logically (would we expect a bigger number? = add/multiply. or a smaller number? = subtract/divide). The student tends to rush through an answer but quickly realize his mistake once he starts to think through it, so we are working on slowing it down. We also went over using an alphabet letter to replace an unknown variable in an equation (from a 4th grade math textbook). He did very well in this area and I complimented him on grasping such an advanced concept so quickly."
"The concepts that we covered were mostly in English and Math. The student was struggling with spelling out vocabulary words. The student's attitude was receptive. I included some strategies in this session. I noted that he is progressing in English."
"This session was great. We accomplished reading comprehension and got to Week 38 of the Math book - started doing some Algebra/Geometry, which the student liked. The earlier weeks were a little too easy for him."
