"At the beginning of our session, the student mentioned that he got an A- on his last exam and he was happy about it! During the rest of our session, we went over several mechanisms for addition to alkenes. I explained how the mechanism for addition of hydrogen and a halide works, followed by acid-catalyzed hydration. Next, I went over the mechanism for hydration by oxymercuration-demercuration, and explained how it relates to alkoxymercuration-demercuration. Then I had him practice a couple problems with these mechanisms, and by the end he seemed to have a good handle on these reactions and seemed very comfortable with them."

"In our first session, we started to review substitution reactions. We began by determining the difference between nucleophiles and electrophiles. Nucleophiles tend to be negatively charged/polar that are attracted to positive charges. Electrophiles tend to be positively charged/electron sink regions that attract negative charges. After clarifying these definitions, we moved onto the core of substitution reactions, which involve a nucleophilic attack and loss of leaving group. SN2 reactions have the nucleophilic attack and loss of leaving group occur simultaneously, while SN1 reactions have the loss of leaving group happen first, followed by a nucleophilic attack. Substrate structure, nucleophile strength, leaving group ability, and solvent type help determine which mechanism is favored."
"In this session, the student and I reviewed oxidation reduction reactions, nomenclature, combustion, and combustion reactions among many other concepts for her final. She has a strong grasp of the material, and understood the concepts quickly."
