Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Kathy in Youngstown, OH
We mainly went over many questions he had. I was pleased that he came very well prepared for the tutoring session. We went over alcohol chemistry briefly, and it seemed like he understood it pretty well. I went over synthesis and gave some tips on how to approach these types of problems. I also went over how lithium and Grignard reagents work. I also briefly explained reduction and oxidation of alcohols and carbonyls. The student looked like he had a good grasp on what each reactions does, but I explained some details/stipulations of each one.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Leesa in Youngstown, OH
Today the student and I went over the following topics: fatty acid biosynthesis and all the steps involved (asked her to actually draw out the mechanism and each arrow), fatty acid synthase as the key enzyme for fatty acid synthesis, and how one of the proteins in the synthase enzyme requires a co-factor. After going through each step, I quizzed her on the main concepts (i.e. how many cycles of synthesis would it take to make stearic acid). We then discussed polyketide "factories" briefly and how the synthesis of certain natural compounds like antibiotics are similar to that of fatty acids. I then quizzed her on concepts regarding nucleic acids, the DNA double helix stability, RNA/DNA hairpin loops and other 3D structures.
