Session Summaries by Organic Chemistry Tutors

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Larry in Pflugerville, TX
For our last session of the school year, I assisted the student in studying for her Physics final. We went over her final review guide, which covered her second semester of Physics. We spent most of our time reviewing the concepts she covered in the electricity and magnetism units, as those were the oldest. She reviewed key terms from those units and ideas that she had forgotten since the tests she took covering those units. We spent a few minutes towards the end looking at how she could manipulate physics equations, particularly from the electricity unit, so that she could solve for any of the variables in a given equation. This equation manipulation exercise proved useful as a review for her algebra final also. She said she felt very comfortable about her upcoming physics and algebra exams, which is quite the accomplishment given where she was when we started.

Today the student and I reviewed a quiz she had gotten back on gas laws with a few answers marked as incorrect. After looking over her work, I couldn't really discern why she had been marked off, as her setup and calculations all looked correct. I thought it was good that she had worked the problems correctly, but it was frustrating to her not understanding where the deductions came from. We spent the rest of our time reviewing material that we had worked together, such stoichiometry, as well as older material like electron configuration, Lewis structures, and the properties of matter. She seems to be significantly more confident in the material from this semester, as it fits together well and builds on itself, forming a coherent picture for her. With confidence comes competence, and I am pleased with the progress she has made since we started working together.

We worked on acid base neutralization problems. The student had issues understanding the idea of being able to convert morality to pH. He also needed clarification of pH vs pOH. He had a good attitude toward the material and picked it up fairly quickly. I told him to work on finding the definition of weak acids and bases, according to his textbook.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Elizabeth in Pflugerville, TX
The student came to our session with very detailed notes that he took from class and from the textbook. He is anxious about remembering everything, and we spent the session going over his notes to help him remember and to discuss some concepts he didn't feel that he knew well enough. We went over notes about different astronomers stretching back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. His teacher mentioned Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo, but didn't discuss them in detail yet, but will likely do so soon. We discussed relative motion, retrograde motion, and epicycles in relation to geocentric models. His thorough note taking skills will definitely come in handy, especially with historical facts.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Mallory in Pflugerville, TX
We covered specifically certain mechanisms that the teacher stressed and the conditions under which these mechanisms will proceed successfully. I would suggest that the student spend more time memorizing the basics of the mechanisms (i.e., not only what, but why they happen) and then focus on fine tuning this to get the A for the exam.
