Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did some math and reading today. I had the student do some addition and subtraction problems and make a little book to read. Then she had to follow directions and draw, count, and color according to the directions. She also counted by 5 and found beginning and ending sounds of words. The second student did some addition and subtraction problems to help him solve a code for coloring a picture. These were adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. Then he put together and read a small book about Paul Bunyan."
"We discussed the details of the placement test and worked through the first packet. We then worked through the first half of the second packet just to get introduced to those topics. I now have a better sense of her strengths and what areas need the most work. We're going to make some flashcards to reinforce certain concepts and discuss some test-taking strategies to help mitigate test anxiety."
"We first went over the test itself and how it would be implemented. We also went over consequences of passing and failing with the new school rules. The majority of the session was spent going over pre algebra mechanics. I showed the student how to perform operations with signed numbers. Since he is allowed a calculator on the test, I showed him how to do the operations on one. We then went over combinations of terms and what can/cannot be combined. We ended the session going over the resources at his disposal."
"We focused on multiplication again and review. We took some time to review geometry such as area and perimeter, as well. We overall had a productive session."
"We learned how to double fractions and add fractions. We learned the following rules: Fractions with the same number at the bottom and top equal one (example: 5/5=1). Equations must stay balanced. (Example: 7+3=10.) We also studied addition computations for fractions and decimals. Finally, we read two stories and answered questions using inferential comprehension skills."
"We made it through the next chapter. I had him explain the main concepts to me so I could see that he really got it. We reviewed whatever he had trouble with, but he did really well."
