Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is focused on exponentials and radicals. The problems are primarily simplifying complex expressions and some familiarity inputting exponents and radicals in a calculator. We had to review order of operations and I took her through several proofs to show the connection between definitions and rules they follow. The proofs helped her comprehend the material but we set up another session this week to increase her repetition."
"Starting with Student A, she did her chapter closure problems that involved scale factors, integers and fractions. We saw that scale factors also involves proportions and you must do the same operation with the same number to every side in order to get to the scaled version. She's doing a lot better with adding/ subtracting negative and positive integers. With Student B, I kept stressing to her that she's doing a great job and even though her grade does not reflect it, she is improving at a great rate. We worked on sketching/ solving equations and then moved onto writing algebraic equations using word problems."
"We went over binomial and geometric distribution. The student had no problem using the accompanied equations, but she needed help telling the difference between the distributions and how to identify them in questions. I gave her an outline on how to identify when to use said distributions. I showed her what key phrases to look out for in questions and went through a couple of examples with her. I then had her try out some problems on her own before she felt comfortable with the material. We ended the session going over AP free response questions."
"We went over quadratic function concepts, and did practice problems from the student's worksheets to prepare for his upcoming tests. He seemed enthusiastic about the material overall. One concern I had about him was that he tends to jump to conclusions a bit too quickly, so he needs to slow down a little bit, and double check his work. We also discussed test taking strategies and maybe found a few errors in the worksheets."
"The student completed a homework assignment and a review sheet for an upcoming quiz. We focused on complex numbers, polynomial factoring, completing the square, and solving polynomials algebraically. He is showing good improvement when it comes to polynomial factoring, and is fairly confident with complex number problems. Sometimes when he thinks he knows the solution he will rush through the problem and make a mistake or two. I suggested he take his time and focus on each individual step to reach the correct answer. His confidence seems to be improving and I do my best to give positive encouragement when he completes a problem correctly. At the end of our session I assigned five factoring problems for him to do for next week's session."
"We went over the student's last test, going over the solutions to the problems she missed. The test was on integrals, double integrals, and convergence/ divergence of integrals. She is self motivated and quick. She needs only occasionally help here and there. A pleasure to work with!"
