Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on derivatives and using the definition of a derivative and the power rule to find them. We also discussed how to find the tangent line using the derivative and graphically representing derivatives. I saw scores from his homework, and he seems to be doing well in the course."
"Today we covered situations involving more complex rates of change. The assignments he had mostly called for the limit definition and method of finding derivatives, so we practiced that. He knew what he was looking for in a final answer. We did more review of chain and quotient rules, as well as special derivatives of exponential functions. I think he found it most helpful to identify patterns that underlie a lot of methods in calculus."
"We went over elated rates. We went over rates expanding, ripples, and velocity. We also went over implicit differentiation."
"The student had two assignments to work through today, addressing differentiation shortcuts like the product, quotient, and power rules and trigonometric derivatives. She had no trouble recalling the rules."
"She had a test and wanted to go over each problem to make sure she understood everything on it. We finished the test in a little over an hour and spent the remaining time going over a homework packet she was currently working on."
"Our goal for the session was to have the student prepared to take his exam on Chapter 4, "Derivatives." I believe that after the session, he was aptly prepared to score where he would prefer to score. We ran many practice problems on the application of the derivative and it's resultant tangent slopes. Particularly, we focused on forms involving e^x, a^x, and ln(x). Finally, we drilled chain rule problems."
"We went through his exam review for chemistry. It was about Lewis structure, geometry, angles, hybridizations and electron geometry. We also solved some questions for different kind of bonds and their properties. I explained how he has to draw each one and identify different characteristics. He understood how to solve them. Then we went through algebra and we solved some questions for roots as well as quadratic equations. He is doing well."
"I made up problems as we went to allow the student to practice the current topic his class is covering, namely the quadratic formula. He has this down!"
"The student and I worked on his second study guide for his trimester final. This covered much of what he did in September and October, and he remembered it very well. He did well with factoring quadratic equations, finding the natural zeroes, and graphing inequalities. We spent some more time on parabolas--I was trying to connect in his head the vertex form of the equation with his ability to find "x" of the vertex in the standard form by using -b/2a."
"This was a very intense session because I spent quite some time with my client in order to help her prepare for her test on Wednesday. I gave her a test on Linear and Exponential equations which I created, to see how prepared she was. She didn't too well in the first attempt, but after thoroughly explaining the material again, she was able to re-do the test. She did very well in her second, and did a great job in explaining each question to me."
"The student and I went over his homework assignment which involved systems of equations. We solved them via elimination and substitution. We also created tables and graphed the equations and discussed problems without solutions. We also had to revisit adding and subtracting fractions, as the issued problems required more steps than the previous versions we've solved. This is something I think we'll need to spend part of a session on revisiting in the future."
"Today with the student we worked on her review sheet for a quiz which covered solving equations with variables on both sides, and multi step equations. We needed to review a couple of the base rules to solving equations and after she was able to complete her assignment."
