How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

The ACT, short for American College Testing, is a college admissions exam taken by 11th and 12th grade students. It tests English, math, reading, and science. An optional writing test is also included. Your high school upperclassman has enough on their mind with schoolwork, jobs, and being on the cusp of adulthood. Taking a test that determines entrance into a college only adds to that stress, and teachers don't offer much help outside of testing information. Varsity Tutors can lighten their load. If your teen is preparing for the ACT, Varsity Tutors can assist you in finding an experienced tutor in Orange County, CA.

Let us connect you with a talented ACT tutor in Orange County who is truly excited about the ACT and teaching it to others. They empathize with your teen since they had to deal with the rigors of the exam before. The tutors are skilled in the subjects covered on the ACT, and they have an excellent track record in helping teenagers.

Orange County, CA ACT tutoring
During our session, the student finished the last of the problems from the math section of practice test 5. I explained any confusing questions, and we reviewed any problems he answered incorrectly. With the remaining time, the student completed an entire science section and we discussed his responses together.

I talked with the student about the assessment in general. We discussed the parts of the test that she thinks she will have the most problem with. I recommended a few books for her to purchase for our next session. She is supposed to take a practice test to see where she is before our next session.

ACT prep. Went over ACT online practice problems in Math and Science sections. The student had some difficulty in the math level of trigonometric and logarithmic material, however she did very well with the science section. We will continue with trig and log lessons and reassess the math at the next session to decide upon SAT vs ACT.

The student improved to a 28 composite and his 4 section scores were evenly distributed. At this point, he's really getting accustomed to the style of the test and is noticing patterns in the correct answer choices. He's also improving with his time management. His biggest concern is his lack of familiarity with trigonometry, so I made him a formula sheet and gave him some sample problems. I will probably do an entire session of math with him before he takes the ACT in February and Ari will continue taking a practice test every week. Hopefully, all his hard work will pay off with a high score.

In our first session, the student told me about his ACT goals and we went over his practice test. We started with the Math section. We went over geometry concepts that challenged him on the test. He quickly caught on after his memory was jogged on concepts he hadn't studied for a year in high school. I feel confident that his goal of a 24 or 25 on the ACT is within his reach. We set times for future tutoring sessions.

The student is still pretty fresh coming to the ACT, so I took this session to give him an overview of the entire test, what he is up against in terms of time management and special challenges (the new essay, the science section) and where he might be able to help himself with adaptable strategies (usage/ mechanics vs. rhetorical skills on the English test; elimination + focus on details in reading). He immediately showed a knack for the English section, missing just two of 15 questions from his first practice. Reading was not far behind, although I pointed out a strategy I thought might help, of recognizing shared words or direct quotes in the answer choices and using that as a hint of being "tricked" (or, if the surrounding details support the rest of the answer choice, a perfect answer). He did very well in science, but this may change when we introduce the time constraint.
