Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on reading poems for comprehension, reviewed the math section and discussed weighted averages and slope intercept form."
"The student has improved in the logical elimination of erroneous answers in the vocabulary section. I have assigned a number of vocab words for him to memorize."
"During this session, the student and I focused on Math and verbal. In our Math practice, we honed in on some geometry concepts that the student struggled with on the diagnostic exam, specifically perimeter and area (rectangles and triangles). We practiced those concepts, and then moved on to more general Math practice from practice problems. We also worked on vocabulary. The student and I went over her vocabulary words from last week, and we picked new ones for this week. We practiced many analogies and synonym problems. On the analogies, she and I talked through the different kinds of analogies that often appear on tests, and we practiced identifying what type of analogy problems presented. We also used a version of sentence frames -- identifying the connection between the words, and then using that connection to eliminate answer choices. That method worked well for her, so we will continue to practice with it. The student needs to work on reading through all the answer choices before selecting her answer. Next week, the student and I will continue to work on helping her slow down, and we will continue to practice analogies. This week, her homework is to study her new vocabulary words."
"The student and I worked on reading and math today, splitting the session to refresh various topics. She is doing well on vocabulary generally, and has gone through most of the word list in her book. We also reviewed analogy strategies. On the math side, we worked on arithmetic, algebra, and geometry - factorization, solving equations, and plane geometry. I have given her math exercises and vocabulary for the next class. Also, next class I plan to assign her a full-length exam as both practice for her and an evaluation of approximately how she is doing with the material. We haven't worked much on timing thus far, so this won't be a big concern of mine during this practice exam."
"The student and I worked on reading comprehension today, and while he showed some difficulty grasping main concepts on a first pass through reading it, as we worked through them, he showed an ability to understand and apply his new knowledge to the questions. I think with some work at honing his reading comprehension skills, he can do well on the section. We also discussed "To Kill a Mockingbird," which seems to hold his interest so far - we will continue to work on both of these in the coming weeks."
"The student and I worked on reading. We worked on tone, main idea, inference, function, context, and vocabulary. We also worked on grammar and verbal, mainly vocabulary. Homework is to do roots. In addition, she should do 3-4 more diagnostic reading and English tests. We will meet next week."
