Orange, CA History tutoring
Today, the student and I worked on the essays on his biology and history study guide for finals. For history, the student had three essays to prepare for, one of which will be on the final. the student wrote down notes about each point he wanted to cover in the essays, which made writing them much easier. The student's main points in the essay were very good but he was not able to flush out extra material to add to his essay to back up his argument. For biology, the student's essay involved comparing and contrasting RNA and DNA. This essay was difficult for him and he had to use extra resources to find information that he could use. The student was able to find many points to use in this essay and we prepared a fairly long essay which is always good for a final exam.

The student and I reviewed his business letter regarding an important social issue. We discussed the issues facing the Supreme Court, as well as how the court selects cases and rules on them. We also learned how justices are selected and the system of federal district courts that feed into the larger federal judiciary. This led to a discussion about the American electoral system at large. We talked about electoral processes that vary from state to state and how the judiciary can influence particular social issues. This led to a discussion about tumultuous times in American history and we discussed the issues that JFK faced.

In our first session, we focused on a sample SAT essay he wrote. We talked about transition phrases between paragraphs and between sentences. I also provided him with a link that contained a categorized list of popular transition phrases. After the essay, we worked on the language portion of the SAT. He seemed to do fine with the questions, though I would definitely recommend more practice with comma rules. For the next session, I asked him to do a practice diagnostic test and also redo the essay using the rules that we discussed.

The student read a story, and we discussed setting, character, etc., and he answered questions about them. His comprehension good. I told his mother to have him read 20 minutes every night. We then did some decoding of words with prefixes. I'm going to the library to get him some books on Star Wars and other things he's interested in.

We concentrated on making change. This is a topic the student needs a lot of practice with, so we will reserve some time during each session specifically for developing this skill. We also practiced counting by 5's, 10's, and 25's, with different starting points, so he could gain confidence in determining the total value of coins. The student worked very hard during the session, and seemed to enjoy it.
