Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued to work on building her reading comprehension skills in preparation for her upcoming test. She was still struggling with noting new words and key details from the passages. Her attitude toward the material that was covered was positive. She stayed focused throughout the session, was eager to discuss the material that was read but not understood, and she showed a determination to improve her ability recall key details. To help with her development, I revisited strategies for understanding new words and terms by visualizing what is taking place in the passage before and after the sentences they are in. For extra practice, I encouraged her to read 30 minutes each day, then identify the main idea or occurrences and the supporting details of what she reads. I was encouraged by the fact that her understanding of what she read improved throughout the session."
"The student and I ran through two practice sections, and also did some concentrated work on systems of equations. He understood it by the end of the session. Next session, he will learn how to recognize systems of equations when they happen on the test."
"The student did well tonight. I changed the lesson to third graph interpretation (bar graphs, pictographs, etc.). Three of the math operations were used when interpreting the graphs. A fun way to alter the lesson."
"We did a meet and get to know you meeting for this first session. We talked about the student's class, and what she is going to be studying this year. We reviewed a few topics and found some areas to practice so she is strong going into class this year. We also identified that doing a "test" with someone watching is intimidating, but we are going to try doing numeracy ninjas next week to work on the mental math and the general speed with numbers."
"The student did very well on her first practice exam. We identified a quick fix for about half of the English questions she was answering incorrectly, and I asked her to start keeping a vocabulary sheet. We spent more time on English today but our next session will be spent making sure that she is up to speed on all of the material presented in the math section."
"We worked on reading, and we used the computer today for the reading program. The student is showing improvement and confidence with his reading. We worked on vocabulary that he had gotten from school. The session went well; we will need to get some more 2nd grade reading materials to reinforce the basic sight words that will contribute to him being a fluent reader. His decoding is getting better, but some diphthongs need to be taught."
